Gas pipe
- Fred Splinge (20th Oct 2013 - 11:33:46)

Can some kind and clever person tell me how I can find out the run / location of the gas supply pipe in my garden.

Many thanks in advance,Fred

Hi Fred, well I'm not particularly clever, but I try to be kind.. I asked my other half, who is a brilliant armchair DIY'er and he said you can hire pipe locators/detectors from various places locally, prices differ depending on how long you want to hire these locator things, a day, a weekend etc., you could start with Altis, or HSS Hire Shops. Here is a clip from one of the web sites below.
Good Luck!

Whether you want to avoid underground service pipes and power cables or dig them up, these locators trace them quickly, accurately and safely.

DETECTOR
• Features sensitivity and audio/visual detection warning
• Can detect up to a 3 metre depth

DETECTOR – Auto
• Sweeps power, radio and genny signals simultaneously
• Alert feature detects shallow cable with flashing icon
• Detects up to a 3 metre depth

SIGNAL GENERATOR
• Allows tracing of individual pipes & cables

DETECTION SONDE
• Self-contained transmitter for tracing non-metallic pipes
• Attaches to drain rod

Thanks JJ, you are indeed most kind and your suggestions may well turn out to be very useful, however I was thinking more along the lines that someone somewhere must hold the plans / records of where these pipes were laid in the first place, eg the Gas Board as was. but now I just don't know, maybe someone does..

Thanks again for your help JJ,

Fred ...

Unfortunately, the records do not show the feeds into individual buildings. Unless it's a factory for example. Just the main feed (probably) in the road.

Thanks for that Robert, looks like i'll have to resort to good old fashioned technology.
