Liphook United 5-1 AFC Aldermaston
- Henry Ascoli (19th Oct 2013 - 19:18:12)
Hampshire Premier League
Liphook United 5-1 AFC Aldermaston
LIPHOOK United delivered a resolute display to return to winning ways and keep the pace with the leaders of the Hampshire Premier League pack, writes Henry Ascoli.
A hat-trick from Ryan Angear set the hosts en route to victory at the Recreation Ground, as home comforts proved the perfect antidote to a demoralising defeat on the road last weekend.
United looked sharp and focused from the kick off, and soon seized the initiative, forcing the visitors into conceding an own goal with 10 minutes on the clock.
Five minutes later, Angear doubled the advantage with a confident finish, and Liphook looked in complete control.
However, against the run of play, Aldermaston pulled one back on 19 minutes, Martin King in the right place at the right time to revive the visitors.
After a frenetic start, the pace of play slackened as the first half wore on, allowing Aldermaston to settle into their stride and dictate matters in the midfield.
Yet Liphook struck a crucial blow four minutes before the break, as the ball bobbled on the edge of the box and Angear nipped in to beat keeper Ben Smith and ripple the back of the net.
Aldermaston refused to give in and made a confident start to the second half, as a powerful effort from Martin Porter prompted a diving one-handed save from Chris Martin to tip the ball wide.
Moments later at the other end, a loose ball caused confusion in the visitors’ defence and Steve Harding pounced to produce a rasping shot and force an athletic save from Smith.
Liphook created few clear-cut chances but appeared assured on the ball, with the pace and persistence of Matt Connor and Adrian Moger posing a constant threat for the visitors.
United sealed victory eight minutes from time, when a long, looping cross was fumbled by Smith and Angear poked the ball home from five yards out.
Liphook added the gloss to a comfortable home triumph with two minutes left on the clock, as a defence-splitting cross reached Moger, who rattled the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards.
“We took our chances and concentrated on the job, and the front pairing of Angear and Harding worked really well throughout,” said Liphook manager Kevin Adair.
“The amount of stoppages in the second half actually helped us, as every time the game slowed down it frustrated Aldermaston and allowed us to take control and make sure of the result.”
AFC Aldermaston will have a second bite of the cherry when the teams meet again in the second round of the HPFL Senior League Cup next Saturday (October 26) at the Recreation Ground.
