Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (30th Sep 2008 - 17:02:37)

Whist selling my Ice Cream I have have been attending both the Redford and South Harting markets. These are small markets in the local village hall held once a month for an hour, with the 'table holders' selling excess allotment produce, home-made cakes, home made cards, with the tables costing £3 each.

I am looking in to the possibility of holding something similar in Liphook (hopefully in the village hall) and was wondering if anyone would be interested in having a table or knew of anyone that would.

Thanks

Ben

Think it would be great - but isn't an hour a bit too short ? 2 hours would maybe give more people a chance to get there. Have been thinking for a while it would be good to have some kind of local market. So please keep us posted, and would probably be interested in having a table.

Ben,
Something along the lines of a farmers market would be an excellent idea, and I think it would be well supported.

I would suggest doing it on a Saturday around lunchtime, as often these things are held so early that I miss them entirely!

It is a shame that there is nowhere undercover in the Station Road, as I'm sure that would be the best place for it.

Great idea Ben. Hopefully our community web-site(s) will kindly donate some space for news and details and with any luck the herald will too.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Sue W (1st Oct 2008 - 13:28:30)

I think anything like this would be successful.

There has been muted voice about opening a veg/deli Shop in Station Road, by a resident - who asked if it would be well received. My husband offered his answers and from feed back most shoppers asked would welcome it too.

As to doing a farmers market in Station Road, I think it would be a perfect location, and I have together with another retailer discussed the possibility of doing something there on similar lines, with the traffic suspended through the Centre (from the Dentist to the old Carpetbaggers) as each end of the street offers parking and easy access to the main roads. We just have to finalise an event proposed for May next, but we may come up with one sooner and approach the Council.

These are just our ideas at present and we hope we can achieve some of them.

Would local crafts people be allowed in ?

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (2nd Oct 2008 - 18:56:46)

Thanks for all the feedback. I will try to sort out a date.

Yes, it was my intention to included local crafts as well as food.

- Ben Govier (28th Oct 2008 - 23:59:55)

Hello.

I have booked the hall for the next free Saturday which is . . . . . . .
13th December.
I am planning to hold the sale between 10 - 12.

So now I am just looking for more stall / table holders. If you make cakes / biscuits / bread / jams / crafts or anything or know anyone who would be interested then tables are avaiable for £5.

I can be contacted at ben@dylansicecream.co.uk or 07816133348

I think it a good idea and have had experience at Farmers markets There are some issues however, as a producer who sells food in public there has to be insurance etc and health and hygene certificates surely this will add to the cost of the table, I know that group insurance is in the region of £600 per year. All farmers markets insist you have insurance before they let you take a table.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Dawn Hoskins (29th Oct 2008 - 17:57:03)

Duly marked in diary.

I hope that you can get some good publicity before hand - that way other farmers / producers may become interested. If not for this one - then the next - especially if it is to become a regular event.

Well done.

When my parents were alive we used to visit them in the beautiful Wicklow mountains in Ireland. Every Sunday afternoon the village had a food and crafts market in the village hall which opened (to a queue!) at 2.00pm and was usually closed by 4.30pm mainly because most of the stuff had been sold!

Ordinary residents bagged up their excess fruit and vegetables and sold them to others who loved to buy freshly dug potatoes and greens along with bags of local apples which were a welcome change to the bland Granny Smiths and Gala species sold by the supermarkets.

There were tables groaning with home made biscuits, cakes, fruit pies and flapjacks. The best Victoria sponge I ever tasted came from one of these fairs.

As for crafts there were hand knitted baby and children's clothes, wooden bowls, and metalware as well as a stand selling watercolour paintings of the surrounding countryside that could be bought straight from the easel.

Tea and coffee was served throughout the fair. Although very little advertising was done everyone seemed to know all about it and, when I was last there on a business trip earlier this year, I was pleased to see that the market still flourished.

More power to Ben and his efforts to establish the market. I will be there if only to stock up with some more of his malt ice cream.

- Ben Govier (30th Oct 2008 - 16:48:20)

Thanks very much Paul. That is exactly the kind of thing I envisaged.
Both Redford and South Harting have very successful markets, selling excess produce, cakes, bread and cards. Again with people queuing up before the doors open.

[editor - we have created a web site for Ben - see www.liphookmarket.co.uk - which will be updated with more information when available.]

Nothing in the Herald this week????

What a shame.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (7th Nov 2008 - 16:13:36)

O, I had been in contact.

In that case I will write a proper press release and see if I am luckier next week.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Dawn Hoskins (29th Nov 2008 - 18:03:27)

I must have missed it in the Herald?

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (30th Nov 2008 - 12:46:34)

There was a lovely article in the Herald a couple of weeks ago on page 2 or 3, with a photo as well!

Less than 2 weeks to go the market is pretty much fully booked with . . .

Christmas Cakes - Soup - Cookies - Cakes - Knitting - Jewellery - Wood Turning - Cards - Photo Gifts - Face Painting - Ice Cream - Tea and Coffee - and much more

At the Village Hall, 13th December 10 - 12

Free Entry!

Thanks for organising this,
although I didn't buy much except cake and ice-cream.

I hope the event went well.

Hello

I am holding another market similar to the one in December. I have booked the hall so the details are as follows:

Liphook Village Hall (Headley Road)
Saturday 14th March
Open to the public: 10 - 12

There are still tables available, costing £5 if anyone is interested, or knows someone who would be. I am particularly keen to find some more food people!

Thanks

Ben

- christi (30th Jan 2009 - 18:42:39)

Hi Ben
Dont know if you have already approached the companies but maybe Liphook Bakers and the people who supply Passfield store may be interested in taking a stall?

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (9th Mar 2009 - 21:33:37)

Hello.

I have 2 tables left if anyone is (or knows someone who is) interested. Especially if they happen to be a food producer, as I currently have a 60:40 craft : food split.

Thanks

- Sue W (11th Mar 2009 - 23:52:21)

Ben,

Please can you enlighten me on your Producers market.

When this first came out, I got the impression that this was for producers of home/farm produce, home made preserves/cakes and hand crafted goods?

Katy suggested that we talk to you and have a stall - (I think that is what she was getting at!)but we would be bringing pre-made merchandise?

Do you not have to have strict guide lines on what is under the banner of 'Producers Market' or is it just a stall holder fair?

Sue

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Paul Robinson (12th Mar 2009 - 08:54:38)

To those who came to our last sale at Haslewey last year and at the Millennium Hall this year we are delighted to say that we will have a table at this Saturday's Producer's Market at Liphook Village Hall in Headley Rooad.

For those who don't know us, Marian and I will be selling mostly children's books at a fraction of their cover price. Samples and review copies with some famous names including Mr Men, Thomas, Noddy, Winnie the Pooh and many others. Prices range from 50p to £5.00 Great presents for Easter.

So make your way to the Village Hall in Headley Road (while you still can!) on Saturday14th March.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (12th Mar 2009 - 08:55:51)

Hello

Yes it is mainly a producers market, but there is no strict guidelines. I started it as a base to sell my Ice Cream from once a month, and if it can help other local producers / businesses then that's great.
I am sure we could accommodate yourselves if you were interested.

I am out all day today but I can be contacted on my mobile, 07816133348

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Sue W (12th Mar 2009 - 10:37:25)

Ben

Left message - but just in case you do not receive it - we would like to take up your offer of a table.

Obviously, the time scale for us to put something together is rather tight, but I am sure that we can make use of it.

Regards

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Paul Robinson (14th Mar 2009 - 20:00:27)

Big thanks to Ben for organising this fair. The turnout was superb and, judging by the tables left bereft of goods at 12.00 pm everyone had a good time, both buyers and sellers.

There is something very comforting about buying stuff from people you know and, short of licking the mixing bowl ( ah happy days), the cakes, biscuits, marmalades, chutneys are the closest you will get to the kitchen tables of childhood.

Lovely stuff, can't wait for next month.

Hi Ben,
I am afraid I missed the market this time.I had dealings with hospitals to put it simply but next time perhaps there is a room for freshly cooked samosas and onion bhajis? We had a stall at the Liphook Funday last year and it went down well with everyone. When is the next market day?
Sudha.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Ben Govier (18th Mar 2009 - 10:06:01)

As the market was so well supported it has been decided to hold it monthly.
Therefore the hall has been booked and the next market is:

Saturday 11th April
10 - 12
Liphook Village Hall.

Which is Easter Saturday, so we will see how it goes.

Sudha, yes you would be more than welcome.

Re: Liphook producers market.
- Sumi Olson (18th Mar 2009 - 14:09:03)

Thanks for organising this event which is a real asset to the community and highlights what a friendly and vibrant village we are! Enjoyed Saturday and am glad that you've decided to hold it monthly after all - just make sure you bring LOTS more ice cream so you don't run out!
Thanks again for taking the time to set and up and run these markets,
Sumi
