Standing orders to Bohunt School
- Dawn Hoskins (26th Sep 2008 - 17:14:40)

Just a little warning.

Having just got my bank statement, I realised that Bohunt School were still taking the standing order I had set up to pay for music lessons. This had continued throughout the summer holidays.

I had assumed that they would only be debited from my account when lessons actually took place, but it would appear that this is not the case.

If you have any Standing Orders / Direct payments set up for the school, it may be wise to check your statement to check the amount of your overpayment.

Standing orders are an instruction by you to make a payment regularly. Direct debits are where the person receiving the money instructs the bank of the amount. If you set up a standing order the onus is on you to stop it - in this case Bohunt would not have the authority to stop your payments! It is always useful to monitor both types of payment. Be sure what you are cancelling if you stop a direct debit - can cause problems if you are obliged to make the payments.

Hi there ex-banker,
Yes, I spoke to Bohunt and they said the same thing - so I had a lengthy discussion with Nationwide about it!!! They were only authorised to take/make 10 payments to Bohunt and it has ended up with overpayment of hundreds of pounds.

However, having pointed the issue out to Bohunt some time ago, I am still not in receipt of a refund. I wrote and e-mailed personally to the acting head and had no reply from her what-so-ever which was very disappointing. It was only when I wrote again to complain about the lack of response that she contacted me but that was a while ago and the cheque has still not materialised.

I think the main lesson learned is…… check your bank statement every month!!! We have been complete rubbish at this and if we had have done so we would have noticed a very long time ago.
