#job for 13 yr old?
- Jo (2nd Oct 2013 20:20:16)
My Daughter who is 13 has a very good work ethic and would love an opportunity to earn some money to buy all the designer clothes she loves so much!
She put her name down in Gables for a paper round, never heard back so popped in one day only to get an incredibly rude response from the woman behind the counter - she was basically told to go away and come back when the woman would be less busy in an extremely unfriendly manner
What a shame! She will never forget this, her first experience of trying to get herself a little job, and as a result she doesn't want a paper round from Gables so she is looking for something else. Does anyone have anything available or know of anything available that would be suitable?
She is very conscientious, bright, helpful and amiable. It seems that most vacancies require a minimum age of 16 however.
As a side note, why do some people think it is ok to be rude to children when there are no other adults around?

Well done to your daughter for giving it a go... hopefully she doesn't get put off but such a rude response (not everyone is like that).
I think you need to check the employment laws, because you may find that there are rules relating to employing people below the age of 16.
Good luck to her.

Jo
As Victor Meldrew would say " I don't believe it" I have known the owners of The Gables for at least 16 years and over that time they have employed many young people, who have delivered newspapers and also gone on to work behind the counter when they became eighteen. I have mixed socially with a number of these young people who speak highly of the training they were given and had lest two have gone on to careers in the retail trade.
With respect I feel that your daughter may have got it wrong. Perhaps she made her approach at a busy time and was told to come back later/or when older. I would suggest that your daughter does not give up but tries again. It might be wise to phone beforehand
I wise her Good Luck

Jo, Your thread concerns me as there are far better ways to air your grievance. The best would have been to go into Gables and speak personally with either of the owners.
For the record Kash and Babs have served our community from 6AM to 5.30PM every day and weekends. They have employed a huge number of the young people in our community. They have given generously to the local schools, Peak Centre and football club to name a few. No closed doors when it snows in Liphook and I have never seen them thanked at all on this site.
Please - independent retailers have a hard enough time without this type of press. It's amazing we still have the luxury of paper deliveries. Please - Support people who give back to the community.
Just to cover the obvious ones - no financial interest, not a relative, not employed by GABLES. Just a good loyal customer!!

Another note in support of The Gables - an excellent, helpful and friendly newsagents. (Again, just a customer).

HI Nigel
They do a great job and make a mean curry! They were also thanked for their work at the curry night thread back in August last year so they have been thanked on this site :)
Cheers
Katy

I have always been welcomed with a smile and a greeting. As was mentioned above they are open long hours and even when the snow arrives they are open.
Well done Kash & Babs

Re: #job for 13 yr old?
- in Agreement! (4th Oct 2013 16:56:39)
Im in agreement,....although Gables staff are very nice, and pleasant to OLDER customers!
I can speak from experience with my son, who was a paperboy for them!!...the way spoke and treated him,...was not acceptable, and he ended his paperound with them!
I Think, with any problems they may have had with teenagers, especially those that are made to queue after school!..i feel that they have tarred every teenager, with the same brush, as those that has caused a nuisance to them!!
Perhaps a bit of Grattitude to those kids, that spend money daily in their shop, wouldnt go a miss!

I agree to say that gables is definitely a helpful friendly newsagents and I am always treated very nicely when I enter. to the person saying about how they make kids before and after school wait in a queue that is probably due to not wanting a large amount of kids in a small space at once, and anyway, sainsburys have exactly the same system but I don't hear you complaining about that.
I can speak from experience that they treat their paperboys very well, as having worked there for 2 years already I couldn't fault the way they have treated us paper delivers :)

Oh dear.
Let me clarify, I wasn't airing a grievance, complaining about the owners of Gables, the way they treat their staff, their training procedures, their curry (although we've never tried it!) or even the level of support they give the local community.
I was simply stating what happened when my Daughter tried to find herself a job. The person who spoke to her was a "lady" we have no idea if she was the owner or not.
My post was about finding my Daughter some paid work and explaining why the obvious route (paper round at Gables) was not suitable before we were pointed back in that direction.
I will look into the rules and regs of what an under 16 yr old can do - thanks to the person who pointed that out, in the meantime anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks, Jo

For the attention of In agreement
Babs Patel has given support and encouragement to the youth of Liphook over many years. She has been involved with Lamps the youth theatre and before that with the Dance Academy and Liphook has Talent show.
In October 2010 she petitioned against the closure of Nationwide has she believed it was a facility for young savers.
Last year she and her daughter helped to organise a Curry Evening the proceeds of which went to Liphook Guides and to Lamps.
Babs campaigned for the pedestrian crossing in Portsmouth Road as she was concerned that young people on the way to school were putting themselves at risk, this she could see from her shop window.

Being a young person having been brought up, and employed in the village, I can speak very highly of the owners of Gables, and they in no way have a bad attitude towards teenagers!
On another note, your daughter should learn from this experience that she should choose her moment to talk to an employer about employment. If a retailer is busy, they are far less likely to be positive toward a potential employee.
This is not really the place for this grievance in any place

Getting back to Jo's query - my son had the same problem and ended up delivering The Messenger at age 13 but that is extremely hard work for very little pay. It's not just the delivering of the papers but the inserting of all the leaflets and folding of the papers that can take a good hour at home before you even start the delivery.
Having said that, he did it for a year, despite dark nights, rain and snow and saved up his money (sometimes just over £5 a week and rarely more than £7.50 for his round) but it was a job and teaches good work ethic.
Other than that I can only think of odd jobs for friends and family - babysitting, cleaning, dog walking etc.
Hope she finds something.

Re: #job for 13 yr old?

Generally, if you’re under 13, you’re only able to get a job in special circumstances. Once you reach the age of 13, you can only do light work. This means that you cannot do any job that can affect your health and safety or may interfere with your education ie. paper rounds.
14 year olds : during term time, you can only work for two hours on weekdays and Sundays and for five hours on Saturdays. During a school holiday, you can work for up to five hours on a week day or a Saturday and no more than two hours on a Sunday. You cannot work before 7.00 am or after 7.00 pm.
If you're 15 or 16 and are working while you're still at school, your rights are almost identical to those of 14 year olds. However, you are allowed to work for up to eight hours on Saturdays or during the school holidays.
When my daughter was 15 and trying to raise some money for a school trip she made up some flyers and posted them through the letterboxes of houses in our own road and managed to secure a couple of regular car washing slots. She charged £5 a time if I remember but was quite often given more - I found people were very generous and supportive when they saw how keen and hard working she was.
