Books and Bookshops
- Paul Robinson (18th Sep 2008 - 11:45:59)

I thought that as we were going away from the original thread it might be an idea to start a new topic in answer to the last contribution reprinted below.

I know we are getting off the topic here...but I feel no guilt about buying books! My children both love reading and I can't bear reaching the end of a good book! Does anyone else speed up toward the end against their will!!! Or am I a bit strange!

Seriously, I find it so sad that anyone would feel guilty about buying a book. There are these new fangled hand held computer things now that hold lots of books in their memories. I'm not a total technophobe, but they can't really replace proper books surely! We would all end up with eye strain!

I remember being shown one in the street by a researcher about four years ago and you could hardly read the screen.
There is nothing like the smell of a new book!

When the report explored the guilt factor I am sure they were describing the self purchase by the mother / housewife. Like Vicki I agree there is a great deal of pleasure derived from buying books for one's children which is doubly rewarded when they in turn are seen to be enjoying the books.

Clearly the 'hand held computer thing' is just the latest in a long line of new innovative developments / fashion accesories all of which were supposed to sound the death knell for the book.

Radio, movies, television, video, DVDs, the computer, blackberries and now hand held thingies were all going to kill the book, but it seems that people love their books and long may it last. There is simply no greater pleasure than discovering a new title / author / bookshop with which to indulge oneself. I for one tend to slow down at the end of a book because I know that when it is finished there is a palpable sense of loss.

Oh the smell . . . and the feel . . . don't get me started . . . and this is from one who is surrounded by books every waking hour!

I love the smell of new books and bookshops too!! You should bottle it and sell as a room spray Paul :)

As for 'hand held thingies'.....since I like reading in the bath and have been known to drop the book in the water...not a good idea, me thinks!!

There is no substitute for a hard copy book (or magazine for that matter) nor for the feeling of anticipation on entering a new or second-hand bookshop.
