Traffic
- niall g (10th Sep 2008 - 09:07:00)
One of this summer's best selling Amercan books is about, and called, 'Traffic'; the reason it seems to be selling so well is the insights it gives on human nature and how best to manage traffic.
The results from the Kensington High Street signage/barrier removal are in it, and traffic incidents have dropped by 60%!! There is also a case study on a town in Holland where traffic control measures, and interestingly pavement edges, have been removed, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in traffic accidents.
The theory seems to be that the less 'cosseted/ controlled' drivers are the more they have to take responsibility for their own driving/more alert they are, and consequently less accidents occur. The opposite seems to be where people sit in big cars on open one way motorways with cruise control on etc and are so unalert they end up half asleep and having accidents.
It interesting stuff and I suppose counter intuitive to the argument for traffic control measures, but makes you think. I wonder what the Council's traffic staff's opinion is, or are we stuck with 'old thinking'??
