Old Thorns - What a shame
- Alice (17th Sep 2013 - 19:13:57)

I am sure I'm not the only person as I have spoken to many of my friends who feel that it's a great pitty Old Thorns seems to be completely uninterested in Liphook and the community. My daughter and many of her friends were employed there for a very short time and we were all shocked at how they treat staff. It seems it is employing more and more non locals. Come on Old Thorns get some employment ethics and a bit of community spirit please.

Surely it's better that the immigrants work, rather than claim benefits. Then the locals can have the benefits that they probably feel entitled to, and can go and spend them at Old Thorns. This should keep everyone happy.

My 17yr old daughter works at The old Thorns with many local people and so far she and her local friends have had no problems with anyone. She has never been mistreated and really enjoys working there.

Edd
That is wrong on all levels!

A.Ryan,
I read you with simple logic. If as you claim, all that what Edd said was wrong, then you believe it is better that: immigrants don’t work and do claim benefits, locals lose their benefits, get poorer, don't spend at Old Thorns and that everyone must be unhappy. Isn’t this what you have meant in your condescending preaching to Edd? Please enlighten us?

Why would Edd asume the jobs have been given to immigrants?

The first post said the jobs were given to non locals. I agree it would be nice to give the jobs to the local people first, we have lot's of teens in the area desperate for jobs.

Why the mention of immigrants on benefits, that is a completely different issue, He was also assuming that locals on benefit can go and spend it at Old Thorns. Perhaps he was ironic, I do hope so.

Please explain why the phrase "wrong on all levels" is condescending?

I do know that the proportion of staff taken on there not indigenous to our country is quite high, but old thorns do not seem to keep them any longer than the local staff they are given accomodation on site so as soon as they lose their job there they do tend to need our benefit system to house and keep them, unless they can immediately return to their own country to find alternative employment. A young local person is probably living at home with parents so would not be able to claim all the housing and other benefits which kick in. The wages offered would not be high so live in accomodation becomes very valuable to non british people which is probably why if there are less than perfect working conditions they stay there. Someone I know flies directly to Poland to recruit home care workers at job fairs in Warsaw they do not ever bother recruiting locally. The low wages on offer to an indigenous person means that if unemployed they will lose all the housing and other benefits and be worse off working. The new universal benefit may change that I dont know.

As I said on another thread, out of all the places my son applied to for a summer (and ongoing week-end) job, Old Thorns was the only one who did not bother to reply in any shape or form.

Surely a simple email is not too much to ask after the effort that goes in to applying? Just bad manners in my humble opinion so maybe it's just as well my son isn't working there and picking up bad habits!

My daughter was employed by Old Thorns and was treated in a humiliating and soul destroying manner, ending up with no confidence and feeling very disillusioned with the work place, including being shouted down by the owner in reception in front of guests for having a glass of water available to her. She had money deducted for being late due to transport problems, and was expected to work overtime for no money at all.
My son dropped his CV in and didn't even get a reply.
People were hired and fired on a whim.
People were not allowed to have water available as they may need the toilet and this would interfere with their work time.
One of the worst employers in the area with no scruples.

The cavery food isn't great either . Hangs around for quite a long time. I have heard that it is all bought in and is just heated up (ex member of staff)The Anchor gives much better value at quarter of the price. The wine is also very much overpriced.

I wasn't going to mention Old Thorns owners attitude in my first post but as he has been mentioned in Jo's post and from my daughter and her friends experience I can only agree. Just because your rich it doesn't mean you can be rude and nasty to people especially staff, the ones that make you money. Please Old Thorns lets be respectful and have some scruples.

my daughter has worked there for four years long hours but she loves it high praise to greg and his staff

I was showing friends around Old Thorns after we had had lunch and was confronted by the owner and asked what I was doing there and if I was a paying guest , he was very rude , arrogant and aggressive. I was actually considering joining the gym there but I will now never set foot in that place again!!
