rust marks on washing - help !

My washing today has come out of the mahine with a rusty pattern that seems to match the pattern of the washing machine drum.
Anyone out there know what causes it and what I can do to stop it occuring again so that it doesn't ruin any more clothes :-(

It appears it might be the bearings or something is inside the machine (rusty nail or such like) ?
