Bohunt GCSE Results
- Jan Rathbone (22nd Aug 2008 - 08:27:01)

The atmosphere in the car park at Bohunt yesterday (Thursday 21st August 2008) was electric! Throngs of Year 11's gripping their results papers, milling around, laughing, joking, congratulating and commiserating.. was a joy to see. And for once in a few weeks, the sun actually came out. Many had not met with their school friends for weeks since the exams ended and clearly the catching up with who-had-what-Saturday-job, which college they hoped to go to, and how they had done was great to see.

Parents hung around their cars chatting to strangers in anticipation, hoping to catch a glimpse of their son or daughters achievement by scanning their expression as they walked (and sometimes, ran) back to their parents.
Many, who were lucky enough to have had bonafide tickets (!) for the Reading Festival, had their back packs and tents ready to go off and have a great weekend, regardless of their results. I think the anticipation of eating out of cans, not sleeping due to the loud music, not having anyone to nag them about washing or cleaning their teeth, kind of surpassed whatever their results had been.

Having worked with young people who were not able to go to a mainstream school, let alone sit an exam, this does not mean we should not congratulate those who did have this opportunity, and those who without the support of some caring teachers at Bohunt, would not have been able to acheive the best of whatever their own personal abilites were.

Many congratulations to all, and whatever your results, remember you are 16. You have your whole life to ponder on what you can and can not change, and to learn that you hold the key to your own destiny. Life has many ways of showing there is a place for everyone and that success in life is not just measured by how many letters you have after your name. As a regular poster on this Board and friend of mine, who sent me a brilliant email this week quoting a speech by Bill Gates, can attest:

Rule 11 by Bill Gates:
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

"I think the anticipation of eating out of cans, not sleeping due to the loud music, not having anyone to nag them about washing or cleaning their teeth"- it'll give them a taster of what student life is like.

Let's also not forget the fantastic Year 9 students who have done their langauge GCSE 2 years early. A great achievement and credit to their hard work and the guidance of the language team at the school.
