- GARRY GREGORY (21st Aug 2008 - 22:26:51)
Can anyone help me, i am trying to find anything about a place called "Woolmer Edge" Liphook, Hants. Apparently my grandmother was the housemaid but i cannot find any information on what it was, where it was and who lived there if it actually existed, your talkback is my last hope, thanks in anticipation Garry Gregory.

I am not a local history expert and hope someone else can add to this, but as I don't know of any properties called 'Woolmer Edge', I have had a brief look at the 1901 census and have found two possibilities.
1. Woolmer Lodge, Woolmer Lane, Bramshott.
(This is now known as Ludshott Manor, see Google maps and enter post code GU30 7RD).
In 1901 Woolmer Lodge was occupied by Sir Archibald John McDonald JP age 30, (the Lord of the Manor of Ludshott) and his wife Constance age 21, both born in London.
They had 12 servants including 3 housemaids, all of whom were single:
Mary Coleman age 46, born in Reading
Mary Oulds age 25, born County Kilkenny
Mabel McCaul age 18, born in Brockenhurst
(Mary Oulds may have been related to the valet Thomas Oulds age 23 who was serving in the same household, but he was born in Aldershot).
Further interesting information about the sad demise of the McDonalds and about previous and subsequent Lords of the Manor can be found on John Owen Smith's website:
www.johnowensmith.co.uk/...
(in the menu click on "Lords of Ludshott Manor")
[editor - this site may be off line]
2. Just over the County boundary there was Woolmer Hill House in Shottermill Parish, Surrey. (Current post code GU27 1QA)
The information you gave places "Woolmer Edge" in Liphook so Woolmer Hill House does not seem to be likely as a location, but interestingly there is now a modern leisure centre there called "The Edge". Not sure if this is just a coincidence.
In 1901 Woolmer Hill House was occupied by John E Ward age 71, a retired timber merchant, and his wife Eliza, both born in London. They had three servants including a housemaid Florence Kimber age 17. Mary A Kimber age 23 was the parlourmaid. Both were single and it's likely they were sisters, as both were born in Farnham.
There were also Woolmer Villas and Woolmer Cottage in Greatham Parish on the Longmoor Road in 1901 but these were not large enough to have housemaids.
(Another most likely unrelated snippet is that 'edge tools' such as chisels were manufactured by the Moss family at Conford from the 19th century until 1916).
If the above records are not relevant to your grandmother, it depends on her date of birth; earlier censuses are online but if she was born later, the 1911 census will not be published for another 3 years.
Not sure if any of this will be of help, but good luck with your research.

Thank you for your time and consideration inputting all the information onto talkback, I think I will take the time to visit the area and hopefully get some further information into my ancestry, once again a very big thank you. Garry Gregory
