Hindhead tunnel – viewing platform
- Dawn Hoskins (18th Aug 2008 - 11:09:22)

I was told that there is a viewing area, so I was thinking of taking the boys to this ‘viewing platform’ to see some of the tunnel work.

I think it must be down that very steep road – however, there are no signs anywhere. Does anyone know if there is one, and if so, how to get to it?

Having read this thread it reminded me that I had not made the journey to look at this major development on our doorstep. Not sure if the visit to see lots of trucks shifting earth was worth it but the walk across Hindhead Common and Gibbet Hill certainly was. Having lived in the area of nearly 10 years now it was thrilling to find another gem in our locality and the history lessons at the two monuments was another great find.

I would recommend a trip up there if you have never been but stout footwear is a must and be prepared for some steep climbs on the way back up!

Thanks for the post - it helped to get me and the small people out in the open for a good stretching walk.

And for those people who prefer not to, or are unable to visit the viewing platforms* you can sign up for the free Hindhead Tunnel newsletters, via their website, and monitor progress from the comfort of your home!

* The southern viewing platform (start almost opposite the Hindhead Esso station) is the short walk, the Northern viewing platform (start from the Devil's Punchbowl Cafe car park) is definately longer and steeper.
