Learning to drive
- Dawn Hoskins (24th Jul 2008 - 16:47:28)

Trying to find a large area for eldest to practice pulling away in 1st gear etc. I want to get the very basics sorted out before venturing out on to the road.

When I was learning, my Dad took me to a huge empty car park, but that was in the days when shops shut at 5:30 and carparks were empty by 6!

Does anyone have any good ideas?

[editor - try the old Longmoor Road (nr Bircholt Road), next to A3 at Griggsgreen]

The Berg (spelling?!?) estate off Midhurst Road. Try also Bordon industrial estate (by the roundabout with the Jet garage on).

Please do not risk the Berg Estate too many driving schools use it. I used the road leading from Rectory Lane Bramshott towards WAggoners Wells to instruct by Grandaughter. She past first time. This may be an Omen

I took my son down to Hayling Island, but we were there most weekends at our van. They have good carparks, (some with shingle, which helps with clutch/gas control) and from beachlands to the funfair is a straight track. From experience and personal annoyance - keep away from residential roads. I also found the Petersfield Industrial Estate excellent (near McDonnalds) in the evenings. Much larger than Bordon!.

Try the Passfield Mill Business Park, in the evenings there is not much traffic down there. Much nearer.

A couple of years ago I took my son to an area near Waggoners Wells in Grayshott. Turn off the Headley Road in Grayshott taking the road to the right of the one leading down to Waggoners Wells. There's a good long strip of concrete road terminating in a parking area - plenty of room to do some 'kangaroo starts'!

I took my daughter to Longmoor Road and found it perfect for the basics, you can also then move on to junctions and reversing there as well :) Good Luck!!

Hi Dawn, not been on here for a while, but just read your post, can't think of a large enough area for the kangaroo start practise off the top of my head...but do you know about STORM in Guildford, if not, do checkout their website - it's brilliant. They have qualified instructors and their own land with road markings etc., costs can be split with a friend or two so your growing minnows can learn to drive, without even having a driving licence, on their private roads, using their vehicles. We plan to use it for ours.

I have just discovered this fantastic organisation.

the Under 17 Car Club. http://www.u17cc.org

Children join in the year that they are 12 - the nearest place is in crowthorne but they have to be graded to drive there - so it does involve a lot of driving around the country to start with.

Blurb says………..An Opportunity For 12 - 17 Year Olds To Gain Experience Of Vehicle Control Off The Public Highway In A Controlled Environment.

Our Aim for the past 30 Years has been:
To enable under age drivers to practise and improve their driving skills legally and safely, in a variety of different vehicles, under properly supervised conditions, and to take an active interest in cars and motorsport, and ultimately to produce safer young drivers on our roads at age 17 and beyond.
