Carnival Walk
- Phelim (5th Aug 2013 - 11:57:39)

This year's carnival walk is starting from the pub in Standford who, unlike the revamped Deers Hut, have no problems with ramblers.

Is anyone aware of whether AMK or others are organising a way for non-drivers to get there, as if we had to walk some of the route has no footpaths, if we go along the Headley Road, it would add at least six miles onto the walk.

Are you saying that the Deers Hut will not allow the Carnival Walk to start from there?

Hi Liz and Phelim

I am extremely puzzled by this thread. I am not a regular user of talkback so apologies as I don't recognise your names.

Just to introduce myself my husband and I organise the carnival walk and took over from Adrian Bird some years ago.
I am a little unsure of how you have got your information but can I fill you in a little and advise of the facts:

The walk has been going for many, many years and always started from The Deers Hut and obviously there are only so many round routes that can be managed from one starting point. Numbers were going down so we have tried putting on a bus to allow us to go further afield but the costs were prohibitive especially when it rained. Last year simply because of The Deers Hut closure we started from The Black Fox Inn, it was an opportunity to do a totally fresh route rather than trying to revamp an old one - Numbers were up and we were so very pleased. As always comments from walkers were incredibly positive and it seemed the ones attending didn't mind travelling to a different venue. We announced at the start of the walk that it was our intention to patronise as many local pubs in the next few years as possible to give our regulars a new route and new walkers to have an opportunity to join us at a different venue. We had no negative feedback on this so hence the asking Whiteley's to assist this year, it does mean an awful early start for the publicans so we are always very grateful. The walk itself takes a good part of a year to organise with long map sessions then walking routes, changing routes, speaking to landowners and then mapping out and this is all before the day when markers are put out by us, not a team of people, from sunrise. It is a hard job but one we both enjoy when we see the smiling faces on the walkers return.

We always note in our letter that if anybody struggles during the walk to contact us and we will provide lifts from a marshal point where possible, we could potentially extend this to walkers who do not have transport to Whiteley’s if required. We do only have two cars so obviously space would be limited. If we hire a bus again we would have to be certain that the numbers are substantially on the up in order to cover the costs.

We did not approach The Deers Hut this year for the simple reason that we had intended to patronise as many pubs as possible to try to get more walkers to join us. We know absolutely nothing about The Deers Hut’s possible concern over having walkers or ramblers in the pub so would not wish to comment at all. I suggest if you wish to walk from there that you give them a call as from experience they seem incredibly approachable.

Are you both on our mailing list for the carnival walk? If so the letters and e-mails should come out soon but if not do give me a call on 723331 or e-mail aliandrob@moonlit.myzen.co.uk and we can chat over any concerns that you may have and certainly do our best to get you there to enjoy the fabulous planned walk and back again. I look forward to hearing from you.

If anybody else needs any information at all please could they contact us direct as we only know of this thread through another user.

Kind regards
Alison

Alison

Thank you for your answer which fully explains the situation fully.

I have no 'information' - just asking for clarification after what appeared to be a rather odd remark from Phelim.

Why is this walk starting from Whiteley's? Surely a Liphook Carnival Walk should start and end in Liphook. It is meant to bring in the local community and yet this is segregating some of the people in Liphook.
There are several possible pubs that would welcome the business but you have chosen to go out of the village.
I certainly will not be attending!

Hi Jimmy

Again I have been advised to respond by a talkback user.

What a pity that you won't be joining us but we would never please everybody all of the time I'm afraid. I haven't found you on our mailing list for the last six years unless you come under a different name. I am happy to add you for future walks where we will be using another more local pub if you would like to contact us direct.

As I said in my previous post we take every effort to do this walk using our time and care for charity and it takes a good part of a year to resolve. We organise this simply to raise money for the carnival and our 'payment' is the smiling faces at the end, no more, no less. The benefit to any pub that we use is really very minimal as the majority of our walkers choose to go straight home so we have always been grateful for all of their help when we approach them. We do this simply for good, not to alienate or upset anyone whatsoever and are very upset that anybody would even think that at all. Jimmy please do get in touch and we can have a chat person to person rather than having negative comments flying around. The reason for the Whiteley's start is to give our regular walkers a new route and this is always our absolute priority as far as possible. If we left from The Deers Hut or The Links they would both be on the same well used routes, in fact they are a very short walk away from one another. Walking from the square would cause a number of logistical problems and require many more marshals then we have volunteers I'm afraid. Again if we use a bus we do need to have greater numbers to cover this financially.

Kind regards
Alison
