Cyclists on Wednesday Evenings?
- Jay W (16th Jul 2013 - 12:07:48)

Why are there so many cyclists on the old A3 on a Wednesday evening? Are they doing time trials or something? Have seen them from Petersfield through to Liphook on several occasions.

Normally, despite the high numbers going in both directions, they don't cause me any difficulties but last night, after overtaking one cyclist and then waiting behind another until it was safe to overtake (stretch between Forest Mere and railway bridge before The Links), the first cyclist seemed to be impatient with his colleague's speed and came up on my inside planning to do - what? I really don't know - perhaps cut across in front of me and overtake his colleague?

Fortunately at that point I was able to get safely past but the other's actions were extremely unnerving when you are trying to watch the cyclist in front and the oncoming traffic (also overtaking cyclists).

So much is said about motorists not looking out for cyclists, but they do also need to look out for themselves!

i believe its cycling club in liphook and that would have been the weekly time trial event.

it might be worth emailing them as i guess they would do a safety briefing for all that take part. here is the website www.a3crg.co.uk

being a cyclist i do agree that there are some cyclist you come across on the roads both when driving and cycling who cause problems and think cars are the enemy, that being said some car drivers are the same thinking cyclist are the enemy

Why do cyclists seem to think pedestrians are fair game and cycle aggressively towards you on footpaths and crossings? Not much in Liphook to be fair but it does give cyclists a very bad reputation.

Better not let it get out of hand...

The time trial is on the A3 so anyone on the old A3 is either making their way there or just out for a ride in the good weather.

In this case it sounds like the cyclist following didn't pull out in front because you made your move first. They may well have pulled out in front had you not but they didn't. Whilst I don't condone such behaviour I think it's fair to point out that all road users make mistakes or do stupid things whether riding a bike or driving a car/truck etc. We all need to take some personal responsibility and act accordingly.

On the specific stretch of bendy road underneath the railway bridge where a critical double white line, 'Golfers crossing', sharp turning and Slow writings - I too pull inwards blocking reckless drivers attempting to overtake me on that dangerous bit. Too many times ill-thinking drivers decided to overtake me there and then... trying to gain a fraction of a second dangering all traffic and pedestrians. I have heard of cyclist been thrown off the road there and i have seen tracks of motor vehicle wheels skidding on and off the tarmac there. Watch out for that bit, even if it costs you and extra less of a second - oh, and incidentally, stay legal (speed limit? double white line?).
