Station parking...again
- SC (4th Jul 2013 - 05:47:01)

Yes, I know...the subject of parking near the train station is much discussed on this forum. Most people who live near the station are used to the fact that commuters will use (perfectly legally) local roads as a car park before heading into London/Guildford/Portsmouth for the day.

But it's not just commuters...on Weds a car parked up on our road and the occupants walked towards the station wheeling away heavy looking suitcases. Holiday perhaps?
Now I can accept a car being parked on a public road for a day or so...but who knows how long this vehicle will be dumped here, reducing parking options for local residents and visiting friends/family.

The time is soon approaching when local residents will call on the council for action.

Hi there
As it is Highways and/or County that deal with roads etc, I suggest you speak to Ferris Cowper.

He very kindly attends our Month End Parish Council Meetings but I think he also runs a surgery - to hear concerns of residents in his 'patch'.

People can be terrible drivers and terrible parkers and it must drive you completely mad, but apart from double yellow the entire of Newtown I'm not sure what can be done?

I have already had my concerns passed onto Ferris Cowper a while back as it is very hard to see/access my driveway along the Portsmouth Road where of course all traffic is only travelling at 30!! but like everything it has to go through so many departments to get anything sorted but at least he is aware of my concerns. I think that maybe residents parking permits should be brought in for those roads affected so that they stand a chance of parking outside their own properties. I have plenty of room to park on my drive my issue is trying to access/ leave it safely as its hard to see and of course due to our drop kerb its a great space to aim for before you have to stop to pass the other parked traffic.
I have to pay to park where I work so I don\'t see why people think its ok to just dump their cars and yes dump is the right word if you see how some of them park and trot off to the station at 6.00am and then don\'t return until 7.00pm most of the time, with no regards to the residents. I have also witnesses people with suitcases leaving their cars and going off for days on end. For the first time ever a car was parked on the road whilst the carnival was taking place which is because it wasn\'t a resident but someone who had left their car there for the station.

If you need the station then either buy a house within walking distance or pay to park like the rest of us do when working.
And just before I finish I would also appreciate that should you park outside my property then please don\'t use my drive to turn around on, I paid alot of money for my dropped kerb for my benefit not others.
