Dogs on leads
- RBH (11th Jun 2013 - 16:44:35)
I have heard that there are plans to keep dogs on leads at Radford Park, I'm aware that this is the case for the Millenium Green and the recreation ground, but does anyone know if it is going to extend to Radford too?

I was reliably informed, when I'd voice a comment about dogs on leads around the Millenium Centre (which I disagreed with), - that Radford park was 'the village option' for people with Dogs to have them off of the lead.
I'd be very disappointed with a further reduction for people with dogs in a country village - the area isn't an inner city park!

Simon, you have made my day! Brilliant news, Radford Park is such a lovely green place to exercise a dog (mans best friend, of course)!! I was really quite worried when I heard the rumour that I'd have to put my dog on a lead there!

If we are supposed to keep dogs on leads at the millennium green then perhaps some signs could be helpful? I often let my dog off his lead down there, I always clean up after him and he's a well behaved dog. But I would be rather annoyed if I received a fine or whatnot without actually being told to keep him on a lead!

There is a sign at the top of the green as you come out of Canada Way - been there for years - been ignored for years sadly too. My dog has been attacked twice on the green whilst the owners have been over the other side. I also don't know how you can successfully clean up when you cannot always see where your dog is. There is enough mess on the green to prove my point.

I've always wondered why dogs couldn't be trained to 'go' in their own back gardens, so that they don't need to when they are out in public spaces? Surely that would be the sensible thing to do?

in reply to a few of the posts a few serious and odd jovial addition....
Its very unfortunate that any dog is attacked or dominated by any other dog, this however could happen anywhere. In fact more dogs attack when on a lead due to the restrictions of the lead itself. Good practice: if dogs meet for them to be off of the lead in the first place and let them settle and both be on even ground... off the lead.
I too have had my dog attacked on more than one occasion, not on the Millennium green however as I find it a friendly place - I'm not sure the location or dog behaviour therefore could be specific to this thread of conversation.
I walk my dog without a lead anyway - so when I get to the green I then have to restrain the dog with a lead?! I find this bizarre.
The dog uses the garden and other outside spaces - I clear up after my dog. The fine for leaving the mess should be increased and ultimately upheld - this I feel is more the issue and should be addressed as such.
Personally I find cats mess even worse - in pots and arounds every space. Even though we're in the country if we can't let dogs out I think cats should be left in doors only too. The owners NEVER follow the cats and clear up the mess - quite irresponsible of them!
My objection is the random use of restrictions by the council which are not applied in context, space by space, or, village by village but by blanket assumption that each green space is the same shows a considerable lack of 'care'.
If dogs are to be "restrained" on the green then teenagers should be too - in my experience of the common, they are louder, occasionally threatening and leave considerably more mess. If you own a teenager perhaps they should be kept on a leash?
If we continue with having the local council set 'common sense' directives then it'll get to a point where we can't use the green without a licence and merely look at it from a far. This restriction for me is ill considered for a village environment. To restrict any other areas for recreation would be a real shame.
Soooooo what's next:
no ball games
no kites
no running in case a child falls over a daisy.

I understand that the introduction of a 'Dog Act' applies only to the Millennium Green and the War Memorial Recreation Ground and was invoked as a result of multiple complaints from parents with young children and the Football Club respectively.
This process will commence once staff have been trained to issue warnings and ultimately fines for persistant offending owners. Signs will be printed and strategically placed around these areas in order to comply with the letter of the law.
Responsible owners may continue to use Radford Park to excercise their dogs on or off the lead but should be mindful of other users and pick up after their dogs.
Speaking as a dog owner I can say that my dog needed no training to use our garden as a latrine and does so with metronomic regularity and, I suspect, a certain amount of pride bordering on smugness!
