Best tip for killing bindweed
- dawn (7th Jun 2013 - 13:03:37)

Bind-weed has appeared this year after never having been in my garden before.
It has quickly established itself all around plants that I love and don't want to damage.
Advice?
anyone?

A colleague of mine once meticulously untwined each strand of the weed, threaded each through a hole in the bottom of a plasic cup, coiling the weed inside and liberally applied systemic weedkiller (e.g. Round Up) liberally to each cup.

It worked.

The best time to do this is when there is plenty of new seasons growth before flowering. Probably about now.

I don't use weedkiller other than on paths and occasionally on the lawn. Bindweed is really easy to spot and pull up by hand in a tidy border. Get in there early spring and rip it out from the ground as soon as it appears and then keep going throughout summer! (it's very weak stuff). Once it's entwined in the flowers it's fiddly. It roots laterally underground so pull up as much as you can. I find it gives up fairly easily under vigilant assault. Good luck.

Dawn, a dose of weedkiller applied on the leaf with a small paint brush will do the trick.
