Liphook Sceptics Society
- Phil MN (27th Apr 2008 - 17:41:33)

The Liphook Sceptics Society – LSS – doesn’t yet exist, but I for one would like to see it founded and am canvassing opinion!

The concept:
An informal drop-in gathering every few months in one of our local hostelries, involving a panel of self-professed sceptics who would like to be convinced otherwise.

Topics for Debate
Literally anything, particularly subjects that already have opposing views or truths! Base rule would be to exclude topics such as politics and religion, but anything else would be considered.

The Objective
An individual, or group of individuals, presents a topic for the Sceptics consideration in order to convince them (the Sceptics) to change their preconceived views and prejudices, all in the name of fun!

Prize
Just an evening of conversation, and hopefully mirth!

I recently heard of this type of thing in another country that I was passing through, and have discussed it with a few colleagues and friends who feel the idea is interesting.

At this point, really just looking for views – go / no-go – with a rough plan to consider logistics and process if Talkback members feel it has potential.

All views welcomed, naturally!

Best wishes,

PMN

Phil,

As we discussed this the other evening I feel that I have to stick my neck out and support your initiative. It is sorely neded and I for one would welcome the opportunity of taking part if for no other reason than to have some fun and laughter in a friendly local hostelry and to enjoy the company of like minded sceptics (nearly forgot the c then) .

Add me to your list and we can talk later when some other suitably interested people come forard.

Barry

I'am always very sceptical of meetings such as this.

If to many scepticals (is that the term for a group of sceptics ?) get together they might be able to form a new Parish Council, or am I being sceptical?

Simon

Hi Steve

I think you are qualified to participate based on your one-liner!

To all - happy to take all comers, have some off-line interest too. Am considering flyers also, but am waiting to gauge local interest first.

Hi Barry - you're in!

Cheers,

PMN

Simon

Appreciate the thought, maybe that should be the first topic....... "Is there a benefit in having a parish council?"

Now that is the last time I am going to mention anything to do with local politics on this thread, as Phil says, it must free of politics and religion.

;)

I really doubt this will get off the ground. Sceptics indeed?

Simon, your comment about scepiticals made me think. What is the collective noun for a group of sceptics?

A redoubt? A dubiety? I prefer "a critical mass" but I doubt you'd agree.

If I'm allowed to join, which I doubt, can I talk about moon landings and man made global warming?
