Battle of Vittoria Wargame – 23rd June 2013 - Trevor Maroney (28th May 2013 - 14:37:48) On the 21st June 1813 Wellington, commanding an allied army of British, Portuguese and Spanish troops, launched his attack on the French at Vittoria. After hard fighting, Thomas Picton's 3rd Division broke the enemy's centre and soon the French defense crumbled. About 8,000 French soldiers were killed, wounded or captured along with 152 cannon, while Wellington suffered about 5,000 casualties. Joseph Bonaparte, commanding the French army, narrowly escaped. The battle led to the collapse of Napoleonic rule in Spain. The Liphook Historical Wargames Group will refight this battle, in its bicentennial year, on Sunday 23rd June with over 3,000 25mm figures manoeuvring over contoured terrain measuring up to 24 by 18 feet overall. This battle is suitable for role players, board and figure gamers and, on this occasion, is suitable for beginners. If you are a student it's free.
