Dog Mess
- Emily Horwood (15th Mar 2008 - 16:43:13)
I would just like to congratulate the dog owner or owners who walk their dogs along the Headley Road, fantastic effort, they actually manage to pick up the mess, put it in bags and throw it in the hedge by the church, better still, they let their hounds do it all over the pavement, so when we take our children to school, we walk in it!
Forget Liphook In Bloom, there must be a national dog poo competition we could enter, we would be sure fire winners, I wonder what the shield would look like mounted in the council offices.
All joking apart, this is bad, so grow up an do something about it whoever you are, £50 fine, so look out the dog patrols will start soon, as soon as the clocks alter, light mornings and their out looking, you have been warned!

Well said! - I am a dog owner and do behave responsibly - but PLEASE can councils have 'poo' bins. There are a few places, but not always in the best locations. Many walk areas have one at the beginning but none further - so we have to carry it about - not pleasant for the owner. I have often placed bags in bushes, but do collect them on the return journey and place them in the bin, which is then at the end of the walk!!
Are there any bins on the streets or green in LIPHOOK?
We do not use streets for walkies - but some have too, so it would be interesting if it is a lack of facilities - as there seems to be a concious effort to pick up the mess -but no where to dispose of it.

Sue,
Well done for picking up your Dogs mess. It's a shame that not all dog owners are that responsible.
My only question to you is what is wrong in taking your Dogs mess home with you? Why should there be bins every 500 metres or so for you to put the mess into?
Take it home in it's bag, or double bag if you find it such a problem, and put it in your own bin. It is your dog after all.
Sorry if that sounds like a go at you but seem common sense to me.
Darren.

There's a poo bin at the junction of Headley road and The Avenue. There are also several in Radford park. Surely the alternative is to bag it up and dispose of it at home.

I understand that if you are a dog owner they are your responsibility, but being that we are a civilised nation, it seems that because you have a dog you must carry poo for an hour or so!! (which I have done many times - but it would be preferable to dispose of it)
thank you for pointing out that there are bins provided along the mentioned road - so as far as I would say those who leave bags and mess are not responsible in the slightest and bring on your 'dog watch'.
Along with the poo issue - gum disposed or spat out by people on public paths should be dealt with in the same way - and if your children do that or drop litter, parents should pick it up too. Then we can have really clean streets.

I have read all the replys with great interest,
Sorry, cannot see the problem, pick it up, put it in a plastic bag, and take it home!
As a tax payer I really do not see why my monthly donation, should go towards bins for dog poo, when the owner really should be able to carry it home and dispose of it.
Maybe all you owners should get together and see if the council could supply proper flushing toilets for your Muts!

What a fantastic idea!! with a frequent spray of lavender or rose petals?
A tad on the silly side I think!!
I and other responsible owners would support the 'no dog mess on streets', and there are already bins provided by the council in some areas. Perhaps these are not in the right place?.
There are always going to be somone somewhere, who will avoid doing anything that the majority think proper.
Sometimes the answer is to aid people in carrying out these necessary jobs, education and deterrants (fines)
are far more productive and acheive better results. Does anyone know if fines have been handed out in Liphook?
If there is a real problem in Headly Road, perhaps notices with the fact that they are being watched may be enough to remind people to take their bags home!
I am fed up with the weekly sweeping and daily picking up of other peoples rubbish that is thrown on the street, and collects in the area of public access and parking, the council seem not to do that either, regardless of paying rates - My son and I spent time unblocking a street drain on Monday, after the storm disturbed long discarded rubbish, which blocked the drain - we could have left it like others had previously, but we are just not like that.
Wouldnt it be nice if everyone took home their unwanted 'gifts' or placed it in the bins!

Completely agree the area in question along the Headley Road is utterly disgusting, and is not acceptable. For those of us who encourage our children to walk to school we having to run the gauntlet through this mess every day, and navigate a pushchair through it as well.
Maybe I should drive my kids to school !

Hi all
Same problem on the Millennium Green, several dog bins but still the owers do not clear up. There really is no excuse as the bins are there. Children play on the green so you should be ashamed of yourselves whoever you are!
I did report to the parish council who cleared it up straight away but I am afraid it is as bad as ever. It is a large dog (by the size of the mess) and I am on the look out!
People have been prosecuted in Radford Park, I believe, but maybe if we all report it to the council they will ask for the dog warden to keep an eye out.
thanks

I've read all the replies and feel that the Liphook residents are being let down by the inability of the local council to control the irresponsible dog owners that let their animals foul up the village. I believe we do have a real problem in all the public recreation areas, pavements etc. with the extent of dog fouling.
My son plays football for Liphook across on the recreation ground, it's disgusting how we and all the kids have to navigate round the piles of dog mess. How can the council allow a recreation area used by so may kids to be degraded by irresponsible dog owners. It's a disgrace as well as being a health issue. For all those offenders who are irresponsible and persistantly flout the local laws, they need to be educated.
Do we have dog wardens, do we need CCTV? Do we need to fence off these areas and ban dogs 100%. Liphook has a long tradition and history for sports on the recreation ground. What can we do to keep the grounds clean?

I have to agree that those irresponsible dog owners are making Liphook a dirtier place - both on recreational land and on the streets. I am a responsible dog owner and am often seen carrying my plastic bags around with me until I get home. Signs warning of fines for fowling do not seem to work in my road either, only last week we came home to find a 'large' dog mess right outside our house. Not very pleasant. I cannot understand why people cannot clean it up, simple, have a dog, clear it up, it's not difficult.
