Passfield Speed Limit
- Dawn Hoskins (4th Mar 2008 - 10:48:01)
[editor - new thread started from contents of 'The New Passfield Store’ talkback]
I have heard a rumour that we will soon have proper signs directing customers to the village store.
That would be a very positive move in the right direction, lets hope it doesn't envolve rare frogs of any sort eh!
All we need now is slower traffic instead of trying to dodge between 60 mph vehicles and a pavement to walk down without twisting our ankles and we will be able to consider ourselves living firmly in the correct century.
I know it is not a huge expense - a few signs - but it is good that our tax is being spent where we live rather than constantly being sunk into Liphook.

Dawn
It must be your lucky day - I am sure I heard Adam Carew on the radio saying that they have agreed a reduction to 40 on many roads including, Hollywater, Liphook Road, Walldown and Budds Lane (30)! I am not sure if the Headley Road is to be reduced to 40 for the whole length - perhaps someone could advise?

I hope it is. Otherwise drivers would be expected to alternate between 40 then 50 then 30 then 50 and then 40 again in the space of the two miles between the beginning of Hill House Hill and Lindford.

Well, currently drivers should alternate from the constant 60+ that a lot of cars get upto along the straight to a safer 50! That doesn't mean they do.
Some cars take the corner into Hollywater so fast they are almost on two wheels!!
Although I look forward to the speed limits reflecting the nature of the road - ie: housing accessed all along it with padestrians crossing to get to the shop and the NT common etc etc, I doubt whether the stupid and dangerous drivers who race up and down will be taking any notice at all unless it is enforced. The problem with stupid dangerous people is that they're stupid and dangerous!!
It isn't sensible drivers who kill people with their cars
If the current limit isn't enforced - why should the reduced limit?
Speed camera please - right where the young girl lay dying in my arms.

I believe there are a number of steps that can be done to assertain whether speedcameras are necessary, there are the electronic counters, a volunteer speed check operation, which is backed up by letters from the police advising drivers of the seriousness of speed - and for those persistant registration numbers - a visit by police can be done - for more information contact your local police station or community officer.

Dawn,
Totally agree with you!
Letters have been sent to the highways agency, EHDC and the police requesting cameras (and signs warning drivers about traffic joining the road from driveways obscured by the bends) but nothing ever gets done.
The 40mph limit on Hill House Hill and beyond is often violated and I can see that this will continue even after the 30mph limit is implemented at Passfield, perhaps even more so as drivers try to make up for the time lost.
So what should we do next...another letter campaign?

Perhaps the Police do listen to requests!. It has been discussed on previous threads that the old A3 (between the square and the Links) has a great problem with speeding cars - there was a mobile speed camera there on Monday, and I have seen it there before. (at the sorting office) They are often out along the A325 (Bordon) - with great results! Somethimes they operate total road checks - with motorbikes everywhere!.
The problem is that you have to prove people are speeding to have anything done - but to prove it you have to do something!!.
We used to have regular speed traps within Liphook, with all roads being checked at the same time - that seems not to happen anymore. It would be interesting to know on those occasions how many tickets were issued.

End of October 2007 my son whist stationary waiting to turn right over the top of Hill House Hill was struck from behind by a car estimated to be travelling at over 75 mph. (Skid marks measured and photographed) at over 80 yards long.
Resultant damage, both cars written off, another car struck. Police in attendance, road blocked, back and neck injuries to my son and his passenger.
Time of accident 4.45pm on a Friday afternoon (peak time).
Action taken by the pathetic police: Quote " after careful consideration it was decided not to prosecute the offending driver after he volunteered to attend a driver awareness course, which we are now writing to inform you that he has now completed."
Moral of the story, before you all start jumping up and down demanding speed camera's and other calming measures check first to see if all or any offenders are actually going to be prosecuted, or is it going to be another case of too much paperwork and lets just send them on a course at our expense with a slapped wrist as usual, also write to inform you then that the said offender has completed this course with flying colours.
Its nice to see your tax money being well spent, next thing you know someone will be telling us all MP's will be getting £22,000 to furnish their second homes.
[editor - the offender has to pay £165 to attend one of those courses - but clearly he got off very lightly]

Steve
Is your son OK now?
I saw the after effects of this accident, I did an emergency stop myself to see if there was anyone inside the car - but he was gone by then - I must have gone past about 5 minutes after it was cleared up.
That bend is a disaster at the best of times.

Does ANYONE know what is happening now that Passfield is not going to be in the Village 30 scheme?
Maybe people know but are not allowed to tell us because it is a secret!!!!!

Nikki,
I am so pleased that you have taken the chair on the Highways Forum.
At a time when there is such a high level of local concern, it is very comforting to know that someone who chooses to communicate with us directly is now holding the reigns.
Of course, this does not mean that the prior incumbent did not do a good job – it’s just that I never got to hear about anything. This in fact goes to the heart of a lot of issues arising at present. COMMUNICATION is the key.
Keep up the good job Nikki, thank you for all your hard work and constant open communication on this forum.
I notice that Barbara has now joined your ranks as an open and outspoken councillor – good for her too – I’m sure that public confidence in our councillors involves them not just doing their valuable work – but showing us that they have done their valuable work.
As technology has evolved to allow this type of instant communication, it is a shame that so few councillors make use of it. Although, as other threads demonstrate – I suppose this all turns on the fact that there is a culture of secrecy that needs to be overcome.
