Supporting the local business community
- Brian (30th Apr 2013 - 09:58:49)

People looking to sell advertising or donations for charity constantly tell us we should support the local community.

Yet we are seeing more and more that these people that want businesses, that have been in the village for a number of years giving good quality service, to give away hard earned money are going out of the village for products and services which are available in the village for the same price and with good friendly customer service.

The worse thing is that when the product is faulty they want the local business to help them. Sadly, as much as local businesses want to help, this is becoming no longer viable as the lack of support from villagers is costing LOCAL businesess dearly.

My employer is badgered all day long for donations from people we only see when its time for a donation.

If the local business community were to go Liphook would become a very sad place.

Well said Brian
My boss is always complaining about local charities/clubs etc asking him for financial support and 99 times out of 100 they do not use his business. How can local bussiness give anything back to the village when the villagers seem intent to spend the money elsewhere.

We, on the Parish Plan Steering Group, share you concerns over this issue. From the research we have conducted so far it would appear that the majority of residents travel to the surrounding towns when shopping for household goods and clothing. This creates an inbalance to the local economy, which clearly needs to be addressed.

We would therefore welcome the views of local businesses on how this could be achieved. We have already noted the need for a local business initiative to tackle these issues in the Business section of the Parish Plan which can be found on the Reports page at: www.liphookplan.co.uk. If you would like to contribute to the debate please let me know. I can be reached via the website or at tmaroney17@gmail.com.
