Bang Bang !!
- Nick Hancock (29th Mar 2004 - 22:38:34)
Were we the only household in the village to be awoken by shellfire from the Longmoor Ranges before 7 a.m. on Sunday? We're quite used to the noise of firing but this sound was so loud that I thought it had come from inside the house and had to get up to check what had happened. When I realised where it had come from then I assumed that a magazine must be going up, but the noise then stopped so I guess not.
And we live close to the village centre, more than a mile away from the ranges. What must it have been like for those down at the Griggs Green end of Longmoor Road? (No doubt someone will post an entry to tell us.)
I've nothing against the sound of occasional firing from the ranges. After all, it reminds us that we live in the real world and it is - normally - kept to civilised hours. But this was before 7 on a Sunday morning - and, on a morning when the clocks had just gone forward, to my befuddled senses it was really before 6. Are we going to have to get used to this sort of thing? If so, then either (a) I shall have to consume lots of extra liquid anaesthetic on a Saturday night or (b) (and better for my health) we need to find someone out there to whom we can protest.
Any thoughts out there? (PS if the "someone" is armed with a howitzer rather than a pen then I suppose I shall have to stick to whisky.)

Was it Bill Ingsgate setting a few cat traps?
Maybe it was it Alex and Alex 10 paces at dawn.
It may even have been Freddie bagging some wi-fi enabled foxes who have learnt the whereabouts of supper.
Or was it a faulty photo-me machine?
Who knows?

Nick -
By my clock, it was 06.38 when the noise started. I think it may have been incredibly loud fireworks, rather than on the ranges, as it sounded more like an organised display.
Here in Headley Road, the back windows of the house were shaking.
Does anyone else have an idea about the source?

Maybe Bill finally snapped and went on a cat-culling rampage? "I love the smell of burnt cat fur in the morning. Smells like...victory."

I thought we had been invaded !!
7am and I live nearish old thorns, it woke me up and the wife told me that I must of left Battfield 1942 running on my PC downstairs. It was heavy shelling but only for a few seconds, perhaps Bin Lardass was seen running through Longmoor Camp. I could not believe the noise. I do know that for fact that Longmoor Camp is being made a little more active than it use to be. The Chinooks fly over our house at 11pm and I sometimes wonder if they are landing on the house.

Have to add something else to that. I've just re-thought that but to me the shelling didn't sound like it was coming from Longmoor, I thought it was coming from the centre of Liphook. Thats what I said at the time. Obviously it wasn't but i'm sure it was further away than Longmoor, maybe the otherside of Liphook.

Good to know they have a few guns down there, even if they do want to deafen the whole village and/or wake them up at dawn, as we'd probably be a major target in an invasion. Isn't Longmoor allegedly a surveillance base as well as a training ground? They have all those lovely golfball-shaped structures, as well as once of the most dangerously short slip-roads on the A3...

Alex -
Oakhanger is the place. It goes down, oh, about 11 floors, all reinforced concrete. If you wanted to know how busy we were during the second Iraq war, go to Oakhanger and count the number of cars in the main car park.
Bit obvious when we were having bad nights - all the operators came out silently. Good nights, they were laughing all over the place.
Bet the Red Lion's takings soared.
