Air raid shelter - advice??
- Barbara Campbell (20th Feb 2008 - 08:57:26)

Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent our underground air raid shelter from becoming a mosquito-infested disease-pit once the warmer weather kicks in?!!

Thank you!!

Why do you want an Air raid shelter in your garden, especially if it's an infested pit??

Wouldn't it be better to knock it down...perhaps you could turn the 'hole' into a nice pond or even swimming pool :)

If it is an "Anderson Shelter" try entering "Anderson bomb shelter" into "Google" as there is a lot of information available in there.

Good luck,John..

Underground will always be damp - you need to put a waterproof membrane across the floor and up the sides.

You can also put grilles in each end to keep a through passage of air.

If you live close to the Infants and Juniors they often like to show kids the shelters when they are doing projects on WW2 - I hope you would consider letting them see..

Thanks, everyone.

We've only just moved in, and the previous occupants lived with the shelter for 26 years, so I'm not sure we're gonna have problems - I just want to be prepared. We haven't decided what to do with it yet (whether to keep it or not) - too much other stuff to do around the place to take priority (as long as there are no problems when the warm weather starts!).

We were gonna contact some local heritage places before we did anything, just to see if anybody did take an interest in looking around, etc, so yes, will have a word with the schools once we've made it a bit less dangerous - and maybe even explorable - the previous occupants apparently did manage to get down there up until about 5 years ago, so we'll see.

In the meantime, keep the suggestions coming!
