Another powercut!
- Maz (23rd Apr 2013 - 20:53:01)

I moved to Liphook 3 months ago and, having had an evening with no electricity, am starting to think that power cuts are a pretty regular occurance for the area?!

Since ive been here - the electric has gone down at on at least 3 occasions that i am aware of.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Ive lived in several little villages before and have never experienced this?

Maz, I know that power cuts can be annoying. I have lived in Liphook (which of course is not a little village, but a large one -almost a small town) since 1970. We used to think in the 70s and 80s that the power cuts were due to our proximity to the railway line! In recent years it has improved greatly and it is only in recent months that the power cuts have started up again - and it is not only in Liphook, but surrounding areas too. You may like to take it up with your Electricity Supplier. Please do not be put off by this one matter - Liphook is a GREAT place to live and there is SO much to do if you want it - just look at the Events link on this website for a beginning. I had thought of moving to nearby locations, but life here is pretty good and for me it would be difficult to find better. I do hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do.

Jenny

Did have a bit of a giggle when I heard the story about blaming the railway! Liphook has always had a problem because of the number of overhead lines although there was a major program a few years ago to upgrade and replace which helped considerably. However we still get regular power cuts, albeit short ones, and I suppose the number of overhead lines is still an issue. No doubt the system is overstreched as Liphook has grown too rapidly for the services to keep up.

Like the other comments, has often been an issue in this ever growing village, but not enough to get any reduction from southern electric, I have in the past contacted them, as it is a pain and can cause damage to applicances on at the time. Southern electric didn't seem fussed about the problem.

Hi,
i rang them last night in between the power cuts and i enquired about the frequency of the powercuts here. Apparently the above re overhead lines and trees is correct. I was told they have people that regularly inspect overhead lines and cut back trees to minimise disruption to power. However more recently there has been a transformer that was faulty which had been fixed a couple of times but last night there was a fault and it could not be fixed so was replaced.
I was told that to get power back asap our supply is re routed on another circuit but this can trip the supply sometimes due to it being a much bigger fault (as in a non repairable transformer) hence the power cutting out so soon after it comes back on. She also said there is not any ongoing particular issue but a combination of numerous things that can cause power outages I hope i have made some sense here.
The lady also said if i was not happy with this response i can then raise the complaint to the next level but i didnt make a complaint i just wanted to know the reason behind the frequency of power cuts we have.

I would like to thank southern electric for our wake up call on Friday morning as the power went on and off, causing all our phones to bleep. Good job they do or that would be the alarm off. I really enjoy keep resetting the clocks especially at 5.50am.
And they reackon there is no problem!
