Potential new skate park
- Jane Ives (23rd Apr 2013 - 08:44:38)
The parish council have set up a working party to look into the suggestion of improving and updating our current skate park. At the moment we are just looking to seek ideas and suggestions about how we can do this and how we can fund it.
The working party will be holding an open meeting at the Millennium Hall this Friday at 6pm for all interested parties. We would particularly like to see youngsters coming along who may be potential users of a skate park as we intend to have a look at a few ideas about what you would like and how you can help with fundraising. We would also like to show you some ideas we have had. To be honest, for most of us on the working party (actually all of us!) our skate boarding days are well and truly over and we need your input!! ;-) We would also love to see anyone who, like us, won't be using a skate park but who has some ideas and enthusiasm and would like to get involved.
If you can't make the meeting on Friday then please join our group on Facebook 'New Liphook Skatepark' where you will be able to keep up to date with our progress.
Look forward to seeing you on Friday.
Jane Ives

For those of us parents who are forever transporting our children to and from the skate parks in Haslemere and Petersfield (and Southsea if time permits), that is great news.
Unfortunately, I will still be at work at that time on Friday but if you look at those 3 skate parks I would suggest it would be a good starting point - our Liphook children certainly seem to enjoy them.
I will look out the Facebook page and hope you have a good turnout for your meeting.

I just wanted to bump this one up again to remind everyone about the skate park meeting happening 6pm Friday evening at the Millennium Hall.
Skaters, scooterers (is there such a word!?), parents and all interested parties please do come along.

I hear there was such a good turnout, my children and their friends were unable to get in.
They are concerned there were too many BMXers and not enough from the scooter contingent. I'm just glad the youth came along to voice their opinions and show such an interest.
Can you update us on what happened?

Jay
Thank you for your interest. The meeting went well and we listened to two very interesting presentations from skate park constructors.
Next steps are to seek agreement from the parish council as it is parish council land and as such needs approval. This should be happening in the next couple of months.
In the meantime we will keep you informed via the skatepark Facebook page (details above). Please do post your comments about scooters etc on the page or email me on jives68@gmail.com.
Many thanks

Some key points, having attended along with my son:
1. The meeting started 15 minutes late, no reason was given
2. Presentations were made by CA Stakeparks and 1SkatePark
3. The most sensible and positive questions and comments were those from the children, I felt
4. Lengthy discussion around the construction material (concrete - someone at the meeting seemed to favour wood for some reason, which isn't the standard for skateparks)
5. It appears a budgeted figure of c. £55k is in the public domain already, via the project's Facebook page
6. Discussion about features including LED lights, but some (adult) voices in objection also
7. £584 of funds raised to date via charitable events
8. Potentially in situ by 2016 - 3 year project to fund-raise, plan and implement
9. Additional presentation on a 'youth shelter' and when best to site it - again, sensible children offering their views that the skatepark was the priority
I wasn't certain at the end what the next key action point for the Parish Council was - planning permission?
Regards,
Phil

I feel a lot of red tape to unravel here.

Phil
Thanks for your post. Can I ask if you were the dad sitting at the front with your son?
I'm sorry if it wasn't made clear why we started late but I asked the lads sitting at the back whether anyone else was expected and there were, so we hung on before we started...apologies.
The budget hasn't been agreed, and the quotes we were given were based on an approximation of what we thought it may cost. From what was presented we are looking for somewhere around this figure. We need to have agreement before we can go firm with quotations.
Lighting needs to be explored further...double edged sword as we said at the meeting.
I was very pleased that the potential skatepark users present said that a shelter wasn't required or necessary - this makes the project around £6k more achievable!
I know some of the meeting was around the adults issues about this project ie lighting, construction, budget etc, but we did want to listen to all views from groups represented at the meeting.
The next step is that because this is on parish council land we have to get parish council permission. I will advise via the FB page when this is going to go in front of the relevant committee as members of the public are always welcome to attend.
Phil, I really appreciate your input and wondered if you would like to get more involved with turning this project into a reality. Could you perhaps make contact via the FB page or email me at jives68@gmail.com?
Many thanks
Jane

I too was at the meeting, annoyingly, yes it started late. Anyway, I seriously hope we can work together as a community to get the Park up & running.
I have lots of fund raising ideas & feel we need a structured program of events to keep the youth interacted with the scheme. Their perception of a 3 year project will be very daunting. We need to keep this alive & fresh, dudes!!

Suzanna you're absolutely right. We would love to hear your ideas.
Again, please contact me via the FB page or by email (details above) as we really need people like you on board with this project.

I wanted to raise this one again as I am seeking views particularly from parents who are maybe transporting their off spring to other skate parks rather than using the current Liphook one.
If you are doing this can you drop me an email at jives68@gmail.com and let me know how often you do this and why?
Please also encourage your youngsters to join the Facebook group 'New Liphook Skatepark' where we will be keeping you up to date with news on this project.
Many thanks
