The New ‘Passfield Store’
- Dawn Hoskins (2nd Feb 2008 - 14:16:11)

Now that the Passfield Store is no longer going to be our Post Office, we need more than ever to support it.

We have been as guilty as others of not using the store often – but plan to change that now that the Village shop is in danger of becoming extinct.

Please, like us, take the time to let John and Sue know what your grocery needs are and what you would like them to stock.

They have started to increase their range already and now stock big bags of dog food and lovely fresh bread – as well as eggs and local honey.

It is rubbish that they have been kept ‘hanging on’ regarding the grant they need to alter the inside of the store. Does anyone know who we can complain to about this?

If, as a village, we don’t support the shop, it will close. It is as simple as that.

The grant they hope to get to run their business
- is this the EHDC one, and is it on a re-payable loan grant - or interest free loan or a one off 'gift'??

Hi Sue

I am not completely sure how it works. All I know is that East Hants District Council has a sum of 70k to divide up how it thinks best - between all the Post Offices that are being shut.

A 'consultant' of some sort [paid up front no doubt] came to see the shop and put forward lots of ideas etc - but that was a long time ago and Sue and John have heard nothing since!

With only a week to go until the PO counter is taken out methinks they [EHDC] should pull their fingers out!

Perhaps someone could enlighten us on the funding of the improvements to various business, who now have to survive without the 'salary' from the PO.

If it is from EHDC pocket - that comes from all us rate payers, and I am sure that serious consultation needs to be made, when public money is invested - in this instance they should not be rushed into knee jerk reactions, that could see the money 'lost'.

In one respect I see your point – but quite frankly, at this point, I don’t care how quickly the knee has jerked – if it means we keep the only amenity in the whole village from closing.

I know that I keep banging on about it and people probably get fed up with me blowing the ‘Passfield Trumpet’ every five minutes, but I feel really strongly about this issue.

There is such a lack clarity over who is making decisions affecting the village and a total lack of joined up thinking here that it is quite unbelievable.

Years ago when the residents of Passfield objected to the wholesale redevelopment of the area [comprising mainly of 3 storey town houses], We were told that this was a ‘sustainable’ area as it had a shop, Post Office, and a Bus service. Well the PO is going TOMORROW !! and without the grant the shop will not survive.

The Bus service is purely to service Alton College so it does not run after about 4 pm it doesn’t run at weekends or school holidays – so I’m not sure how ‘sustainable that is’ and the only other route into Liphook is the ridiculous circular South West Trains Bus that takes about 50 minutes and goes all around Bordon first. So …if there is not a ‘sustainable transport link’ to other towns, what does that leave us with as the justification for all the new building?

I know that we have CHOSEN to live here in this beautiful green idle….but we pay just as much in tax contributions as everyone else. Why is it then that when we ask for a safe road, signs that are light reflective and other bits and bobs they are considered an unacceptable expense??

The only bit of good news that Passfield had was the compulsory 106 contribution to make the road safe. OK, we were told why we couldn’t have a crossing island (which was the original proposal) but were equally happy to have a new ‘scalpings’ pavement - but even that seems to have been scuppered by the upper echelons within EHDC.

I feel like Passfield is being s**t on from a very great height, quite frankly if the EHDC were deliberately trying to waste this developers money – they couldn’t have done a better job!

Thank you for stocking my special crusty bakers loaf. Thanks also for now stocking organic milk and organic eggs.

It is very good that you are starting to sell an increasing range of good stuff, I look forward to your deli counter opening.

Well Done

I understand the problems facing both the owners and the residents if the shop struggles to survive - but that has been going on for many years in other areas. It doesn't stop me from being concerned.

Would it be possible to turn it into a 'community' owned venture - there have been many successful organisations to date, perhaps someone has already looked into it?

John & Sue

Congratulations on your efforts to move your business forward, and not projecting doom and gloom. Your cheese and bacon sandwiches (Home cooked) are excellent - as informed by workers at a factory on the passfield mill business park - and delivered too!!.

Excellent!
