Car Insurance
- A. Ryan (7th Apr 2013 - 12:05:52)

Can anyone recommend the best Insurer (and cheapest) for an 18 year old lad. Yes another one let loose on the road! It is so expensive so wondered what others have done.

I have a couple of years to go before I need to worry about that but relatives used an Admiral multi-car policy. Not sure if it was the best one but it worked for them.

Have also been advised that the best vehicle for a teenage lad (insurance wise) is a Landrover Defender - would be interesting to know if that was the case (I might have to start saving up!).

My boys have both used co-op insurance but both got a better quote by actually calling them rather than the quote they gave online, there was quite a difference in price. It makes a big difference in price if they are trying to insure a family type car rather than the usual corsa, clio, peugeout etc.

Apparently with the sky high cost of insurance and the recession the number of people without insurance is going through the roof. What with automatic number plate reading cameras linked to the insurers database the chances of being caught are also higher. So he's doing the right thing.
Try both phoning around the brokers and using the comparison sites, they sift through the different insurers for a cheap quote(but try to go with an insurer with a good reputation, you can google that)
Another 'trick' is to add him as a named driver on your policy. This is cheap, but you MUST be the main driver with him as occasional, so no good if he uses it to commute. You also risk your own no claims bonus if he has a prang (they are the riskiest group!)
Yet another trick is to insure it in his name(third party is cheapest) and add a more mature female as an additional driver, they like that.
Apart from the type of car as already mentioned which makes a huge difference, some companies will reduce his premium if he fits a camera or restricts himself to day driving, which may suit some of the more restrained youngsters, but don't forget the film is not accessible to him, just the insurers and police and could be used to convict him if he has a crash!
Other than that, just bite the bullet and try not to have any prangs, then it will just get cheaper(in theory).
Good luck.

Another thing I just thought of. You can get a lower premium if you restrict the mileage, to say less than 5000 miles a year or whatever he can get it down to. This would be especially helpful in the first year or two when the premiums are so high. But he must stick to it as he will only be insured for the agreed mileage. beyond that there will either be an agreed formula or he will have to phone them and ask for extra, but they would normally charge quite a lot for that.
Sorry to ramble on but been there, done that!

Another option is a telematics based insurer like

www.drivelikeagirl.com

The better you drive the less you pay.

As insurers are no longer permitted to discriminate between the sexes it is available to boys as well.

Yours may well find the included handbag cover superfluous but do make sure he takes more than one attempt when parking.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
We have insured him now, with a company called 1st Central, after getting a few quotes. What a laborious job that is doing it on line! It was for a ridiculous amount of money, so much I don't want to think too much about it otherwise I will pass out!!!!
We did try getting quote to put me, a woman on there, but that seemed more expensive. Putting them as a named driver can't be done as that seems to be against the law and is called " fronting" We have just had to grin and bear it.

Glad you have cover arranged. Others struggling to insure could try Only Young Drivers on 0800 292 2280. The young person has to make the call and a technology-based assessment is made based on their answers to a series of driving related questions us. Backed by Aviva, Sabre and others.
