23rd LiDBA Charity Bike Ride
- LiDBA (5th Apr 2013 - 13:27:43)
The Bike Ride entry forms are now available from local shops, the Parish Council Office and the Bohunt Centre.
They can also be downloaded from the LiDBA web site www.lidba.co.uk.
We are anxious to finalise our Marshall team to assist in directing the riders around the course. If readers of this post would like to marshal on the day please contact info@lidba.co.uk. It is a rewarding experience and is essential to the smooth running of this important event.
The following article appeared in the last issue of the Liphook Community Magazine and we hope it provides an interesting summary of the event:
| | Arrangements are now well advanced for the 23rd LiDBA Charity Bike Ride to be held on 9th June. The Main Ride commences at 10.00 am with the Junior Ride commencing on the Bohunt sports field at 10.30 am. The Junior Ride is for children under 12 years. Children between the age of 10 and 16 years may take part in the Main Ride provided that they are accompanied by a designated adult.
Last year we introduced a No Helmet No Ride rule which was a great success and was supported by all participants; this rule will be applicable to this year’s ride.
Entry forms will be available early April from local shops and the www.lidba.co.uk web site.
There has been an excellent support from sponsors; who all recognise the importance of this event which last year raised over £53000 for local charities.
At Bohunt there is a carnival atmosphere where the great selection of stalls, including refreshments, run by local charities and organisations enhance the spirit of the occasion.
Many of the entrants are regular participants and look forward to enjoying the camaraderie of taking part. The atmosphere at the start and during the Ride is fantastic.
The fully marshalled route from Bohunt passes through The Square and the heads towards Rake. The first minor hill encountered is at The Black Fox and at this stage the bevy of riders fly up it with exhilaration onto the first ‘interesting’ hill at Rake. Having mastered this hill the Ride takes you on to Hillbrow where a gentle downhill slope to the junction with the A272 is speedily accomplished. Riding along the A272 in single file the riders reach Rogate where the route turns left up Rogate Hill. From experience this hill is a bit of a ‘slog’, but if taken slowly and surely does not cause most riders a problem. Having conquered Rogate Hill the route through Fyning Hill, Borden, Milland & Elmers Marsh is a delight. However regular Riders will know of the ultimate challenge soon to be met –Lynchmere Hill!!!.
Many riders cycle up all or part of this hill without a problem; others take the entirely reasonable decision to walk knowing that there is a refreshment stop at Lynchmere. With now only a few miles to go the riders become almost ecstatic with the knowledge that they will soon be welcomed back at Bohunt with rapturous applause from the hundreds of supporters and other spectators.
Let’s hope that you are enticed by this summary of the Ride and get into training for the Ride or sponsor the riders and support them on the day. | |

That doesn't sound like the hills that we all know and love :). My memory every year is "Thank God, no more training up this ruddy hill [Linchmere]", but I keep coming back and getting faster. But I would like to know how people do it in just over an hour...is there a secret...?

Some of the organisers are checking the route of the Charity Bike Ride, on their bikes, this forthcoming Sunday to ensure that everything is OK for the Ride being held on 9th June.
Many people have already sent in their entry forms and received their Rider Packs in readiness for taking part.
It's not long now until the Ride, so we would like to encourage those intending taking part to send us their entry forms as soon as possible.
Entry forms are available from local shops, Bohunt Centre & the Parish Offices.
You can also download the forms from www.bikeride.co.uk including paying by PayPal.
In addition to the Main Ride there is a Junior Ride held on the Bohunt Centre sports field plus several stalls run by local charities.
Further details can be obtained from the above web site.

So how was this morning's road check? My view is the road is generally in a better state than last year, but I did notice a sign on the run in to Fernhurst saying "Road Closed for 4 Weeks from 27/05/2013"

Members checked the Bike Ride route on Sunday on their bikes and established that it was OK apart from a few potholes that are quite obvious to cyclists.
As suggested in the previous post on this web site please send in your entry forms asap so that you have sufficient time to obtain sponsors for your Ride.

So all we need is some sunshine and we are good to go. I don't ever want to ride again in the weather a couple of years ago.

Cyclist beware. Vann Road (the run in to Fernhurst) has road works and barriers creating pinch points. The road is open, but the signs say not.

Richard, not sure if you have done LIDBA before but it does not actually go up Vann Road!!

I have noticed some increasing bad and impatient drivers that are carving up cyclists rather than waiting to overtake.
One car overtook on the blind bend and nearly drove into an oncoming car.
Please be careful when you practice - maybe safer to go out in two's?

Unless the road changes its name at the Milland end, the map says it is Vann Road, and I have done it before. But for clarity after riders exit Milland, they will come to a right hand turning towards Fernhurst, but a while before the turn off for Linchmere. This is the road I am referring to

In response to the query on this post we have copied our response to another post on the same subject as follows:-
................................................................................
Suffice to say full and adequate provision has been made to cover any road work problems that may impact on the route.
More on the day
The safety of the riders and other road users is and always will be LiDBA's main concern
...............................................................................
We do not expect the road works to affect the Bike Ride
The weather forecast looks good for the Ride on Sunday.
Remember it is a Ride and not a Race!!

Weather is going to be good today. No rain predicted.
Temperature 12C to 18C during the ride, water is available at the 3 rest points, but you would be advised to bring a bottle with you.
Sun cream - please cover all exposed parts as UV will be high today, with little cloud cover predicted.
Most important - NO HELMET - NO RIDE.
Please remember this is not a race, roads are not closed to normal traffic (except for the Square at departure). Please ride in single file.
Have an enjoyable and safe ride and remember to collect your sponsorship promptly. Good luck to all the riders.
Alan

My first LiDBA bike ride today with my mate Russ Ellis, doing our bit on behalf of Liphook Community Laundry. I have to say it was a great experience (in spite of Linchmere Hill!) and take my hat off to all the organisers and support people who make it happen. Thanks to you all.
I'll be back next year !

A HUGE thank you to all the organisers and marshalls for this year's LIDBA ride, it was incredibly well organised and it's important we say thank you to all for their efforts.
This was the first year my son was old enough (11) to do the full route, and he really enjoyed it.
The atmosphere amongst the riders was brilliant, so a thanks to them also!
I think it's great that the town has this event annually.

St John Ambulance, on duty at the Bike Ride, attended the accident at Borden Wood promptly with their ambulance and transported the casualty to hospital.
Hopefully we will get more details about her condition later.

It was a pleasure to be a marshall yesterday - some riders were quite serious - but the majority of you were happy and smiley and many said thank you as you flew on by. So thank you for that, it made it worth being there.

On behalf of Lidba members, I would like to thank all who helped on the day, and all the participants, who make this such a successful charity ride. The atmosphere of enthusiasm and good humour that you generate on the day is quite special. Good luck with collecting all your sponsorship money - we are hoping you can exceed last year's splendid total of £43,000 for a wide range of very deserving local charities.
