Carnival Fund Raising
- Karen Feeney (16th Jan 2008 - 13:20:43)
Dear All
As you may be aware, staging the Carnival costs an enourmous amount of money each year and we (the Carnvial Committee) are currently putting together some fund raising ideas for 2008. Unfortunately, some of the events of 2007 were not very well supported, so I was wondering what the people of Liphook would like us to do in 2008. We currently have a quiz night, a car boot and barn dance but clearly need some new ideas for things that the general public are interested in and would like to attend. Your comments, ideas and support would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Karen Feeney
P.S. we are always looking for new committee members or money collectors on Carnival night. Our AGM is on 13th Feb at the Peak Centre - 8.00pm start. Come along and see us!

I will have to get my brain thinking on new ideas but a thought did pop into my head. Have you considered approaching some of the clubs and activities locally and asking them if they would donate one session of their subs that they collect? It may not be much if one one or two were willing but if quite a few did the money would soon add up. It could be a kids dance class or karate club, anything really. i'm sure parents and children alike wouldn't mind if their money to pay for the class were to be donated for such an event. also that way more people in the community would have contributed in some way. just a thought.

Hi Karen,
I'd still be interested in going on a guided tour of Bramshott ghosts, as discussed sometime ago :)

I hear music concerts and bike rides are quite popular for raising money.

Karen,
I have just had an idea - one that has not been tried and could if enough join in make an enjoyable event for many people. It wouldn't demand much effort for the donations - just being in the right place at the right time.
I wont give anything away here - as if you run with the idea it may spoil the event!!

Dear Eneida I did contact jo Smith about a guided walk re haunted Bramshott but he was not keen- he does not believe ib Ghosts or Ghouls- but he is willing to do a guided walk/talk on Flora Thompson, as he writes books on the subject. As the weather is so bad at the moment, it will perhaps be better left to spring at least, unless he is booked for an indoor talk. I have been to a few of his local talks and he is very knowledgeable on the subject. Perhaps we should anyway cash in somehow due to the TV series.

Ask the School if they will allow you to show a movie in their hall.
They often do this to raise funds for the school and it is ALWAYS popular - usually involves a kids movie and copious amounts of sweets being bought in the tuck shop
I'm thinking that if you split the money between FOLJS and yourselves you would still make loads..

Hi Barbara!
Shame he doesn't believe in ghosts....but never mind:)
I think a guided tour on Flora Thompson would be an excellent idea and should raise some money, especially with the series going on at the moment....
I'd be interested in talking to him, especially since I've learnt that my house was built by a local postman, called Frank Gollop, in approx. 1905, so perhaps Flora might have been friends with his family (I believe Mr. Gollop was born in Bournemouth) and visited here!!!

Hi, Eneida -
Don't forget that much of Flora Thompson's archive went to, if I recall correctly, the South West Uni of Texas? I'm sure, if someone wanted to set up the tours and talks, there would be a real interest from the States.
Anne Silver edited the Peverel Papers for the Community magazine - perhaps she might be persuaded to get involved?
Anyone with an interest should contact Jo Smith, because he publishes some of Flora's books, and he'll even hand-deliver them locally if you buy from him.

Hi Freddie,
I certainly wouldn't want to tread on anybody's toes regarding Flora Thompson....perish the thought!!!
I was just responding to Barbara's excellent suggestion that it would be a good fund raiser for the Carnival....and I must admit, I did get a little bit excited to learn that my house was built for a local postman who lived around the time Flora was in Liphook :D
Makes me wonder how much postmen earned in the early 1900s!! How many would be able to afford to have a detached house built nowadays???

Hi, Eneida -
Good point! You have to cast your imagination back and remember what an important job postmen did - come to that, still do.
In those times, the postman was a very important link to the outside world. I think that's been portrayed well in the BBC series. The Postmaster/mistress would have been a real figure of authority in a smallish community. I guess, if you had a Postm.., it was a sign that your community was important enough....
To bring this thread back a bit to fund-raising: I know Jo Smith has written and produced several plays, based on the area. I think it's the Headley Players (?) who have performed most of his work locally. Perhaps someone could speak to Jo Smith and the actors, and ask if they would be prepared to stage some special performances, to aid with Carnival fund-raising.
Or how about a themed event somewhere local, with people turning in up in period dress and maybe some sort of re-enactment, meal, entertainment. I would think something like a skittles evening, etc might be a starting point?
Or maybe we could look at the coming of the railway and all the implications that development had on the rural community.
Or maybe something jointly with the Preservation Society? They need to raise funds to carry on their valuable work in archiving all the records they have, in a step towards creating a permament exhibition/learning resource at the Millennium Hall.
Karen - what do you think?

I know this is getting away from Karen's original thread but am I alone in thinking that, as someone has noted above, a postal delivery service, and a Post Office did much to put a hamlet / village 'on the map'?
Has anyone else spotted the cruel irony between the sterling service given by Flora Thompson and her husband in the early 1900s and the thoughtless and financially ruinus attitude of today's Post Office in ripping the heart out of Passfield?

Thank you all very much for some great ideas. I haven't had much time to do anything over last week, as have been playing Florence Nightingale to sick children (who are still not much better!). Will be back in action shortly though and will keep you updated with our programme of events for 2008. However, one date for your diary so far is our AGM which is on February 13th, 8pm, Peak Centre. You will be very welcome to come along.
Thanks again
Karen
ps. Sue - I will be in touch when I get the chance!
