electric guitar lessons
- Dawn Hoskins (2nd Jan 2008 - 19:39:54)

Having just purchased an electric guitar for my 11 year old - I now need to sort out lessons.

I would appreciate any feedback on local teachers whether good or bad.

Helloo

If these are your sons first lessons then the worst way to learn is on a electric guitar.. Suggest you buy him a acoustic mixed string whilst he learns the basic chords etc..you can get a new one for about 40 quid.

Take a look also on learning guitar websites and will suggest the same thing. Good Luck!

I would have to disagree with Jon's statement about learning to play on an electric guitar.
Both myself and my 10 year old son have an electric guitar and having previously played an Acoustic guitar, we find the Electric easier to play.
This is a site we used, hope it proves useful.

Yes I see that it could be a little easier to learn on an electric but it is a bit like learning to drive in an automatic car which of course is easier, but you then have to have lessons again to drive a clutch car.

Same thing with an electric. As you had said you have played and acoustic before an electric, then of course you would find it much easier. The alternative is an electric acoustic!!!! It really depends what type of music they want to play but a lot of teachers do recommend an acoustic first......inlcuding me.

Best of luck though its a wonderful instrument but very hard on the pads on of your fingers but they will soften with practise.

If you visit Chamberlin Music on Weyhill in Haslemere they will be able to advise you on good local teachers - the staff there are very professional and very helpful.

There was an article, accompanied by the obligatory advertisement, in this week's Petersfield Post for "Clive's music school" which specialises in rock/pop band instrument tuition for children. It sounds perfect.

www.clivesmusic.com

or phone Mark Thompson-Smith (formerly of Praying Mantis & The Sweet) on 023 9243 6122

and you'll have him playing Ballroom Blitz & Blockbuster in no time.

Thank you so much for all your help.

We have sorted lessons out now with the teacher who runs "Live Performance Workshop"

Thanks again, I hope this info will be valuable to others as well.
