Dog Fouling - Pooh
- K Spence (28th Feb 2013 - 19:42:29)

As a dog owner I am continually dismayed by the amount of dog fouling in and around the Liphook area, on my walks I take in The Avenue, London Road, Headley Road, Haslemere Road, Radford Park, The Rec and most of the estates in the village.

I am seriously shocked by how much dog pooh there is on our streets, do we as owners not have to take responsibility for clearing this up.... I watched a girl with two very large brown dogs in Radford Park let her dogs do their business and just walk off, for goodness sake this is a childrens play area should we not clean up?

I walked through the Mead, just off Tower Road, round Tunbridge Crescent and back home towards the Avenue and I counted at least fourteen different droppings.

I do not want all dog owners to be tarred or poohed with the same brush, but we do need to stop this happening and make our streets and parks a cleaner place for us all to enjoy.
A proud Liphook dog owner.

Unfortunately the minority give the majority of responsible dog owners a bad name, of course we should bag it and bin it, not leave full plastic poo bags around.

Somebody actually stuffed a Sainsbury bag with dog muck in down a rabbit hole in Devils Lane yesterday. Don't worry, I took it home and got rid of it for you.

I also noticed some inconsiderate parking under the old chestnut trees in the avenue.

Ed - Shouldn't this be merged with the other "poo" threads out there as there are a few. It's extremely unpleasant and very inconsiderate. Is the poster who comments about the inconsiderate parking one of those happy to leave dog poo around? - there is no excuse! You shouldn't park inconsiderately either though.

If you have a camera phone PLEASE take a photo and the evidence to the Parish Office.

We now have regulation in place and can fine these people - if there is photographic evidence and witness statement.

Please be pro-active then we can change the behaviour of these people that treat public grass land like dog-toilets.

I would not advocate speaking to these people yourself, just make a note and take a photo. When you get home write up where when etc describe the dog and the owner and give the photo in with that.

I think Mike was talking about a dog parking it's rear end under the trees, rather than a car.

My son attends nursery at the Willows based in the rec and we are constantly having to dodge the dog poo on the path leading up to it. Please, please have more consideration when letting your dogs mess everywhere.

A little more cryptic than that, I'm afraid.

I was more refering to the aged fruit of the trees I mentioned.

So there are still problems on the Rec. In my opinion the signage is useless. If you go through the main gate there is a small sign on the right hand gate post which you can hardly see. So, if you go down to the rec today you're in for a big surprise (on your shoe) unless you go in disguise. Does the Council have an enforcer, because if they do he/she is not very sucessful. Bigger and bolder signs up might help deter people. The Council should splash some cash on it.

Today after a near 3 year absence (due to dog mess) I visited ludshott common, the main car park. First thing i did was step in dog mess when getting out car directly opposite the dog waste bin. Then walked past dog waste bin turned left, and followed a trail at least 60m long of dog mess. Further into the walk was still dog mess everywhere. The saddest bit is its in the middle of knowhere so people are doing it on purpose taking their dogs out to have a crap on common land so it's not in there garden for them to deal with. SAD DISGUSTING PEOPLE

Iron Hill has become a total dog toilet as well.

- RB (18th Mar 2013 - 16:01:46)

I\'m not sure why this has become such a big issue these days. Dog fouling in public and recreational areas has always been with us - it was just as bad when i was a child and that was long time ago now. What is the big problem with it all? I remember as a youngster playing in the park with my friends and treading in dog poo was a regular occurence - not a pleasant experience granted, however, you do learn to become more observant. I well remember my mum scraping it off me and brother\'s shoes or football boots with a kitchen knife (she washed it thoroughly afterwards i hasten to add). I mean surely there is an ecological benefit with dog fouling in parks etc - its all working its way back into the soil and helping to support the ecosystem. Have we all just become too sanitised these days!

What a ridiculous comment from RB.

"Dog fouling in public and recreational areas has always been with us... What is the big problem with it all?"

Does that mean RB would have no objection if all the local dog walkers came round and let their animals defecate in his garden.

If RB's opinion on that is that he wouldn't want this, why does he think it is OK for the public to have to endure in public spaces.

I agree with Simon about Iron Hill and I think it would help if there was a bin there that people could use. At the moment I think people use the fact that there's no bin as an excuse not to pick it up. Could somebody maybe let us know how to go about getting one put there and I know that some people still won't use it but it should help.

I also have a problem with dog walkers letting their dog play/poo on my front garden. The ones I've caught have both been men but one teenager and one elder man, neither appologised or cleaned up the mess. I've even had a dog run up to my front window across the driveway while still on a lead. That really winds my dog up!

I'm going to be known as the local mad woman at this rate.

As a responsible dog owner I had to comment on this thread! Anyone who knows dogs will appreciate that when a dog needs to go, there is nothing that can be done to stop it, and by pulling it away from an area that is maybe in front of a house etc. can often make the situation worse!! You just end up with a line of poo, which is harder to clean up!! And trust me, if a dog poos in front of a house, or front garden of a house, most dog owners are as mortified as the owners of the grass/area!!! This happened to me this evening and despite clearing it up to the best of my ability, I still feel quite awful and will often knock on the door to apologise, I didn't this evening as no one was in and I have lost my voice!!!!

I have read this thread with real interest and I have to agree with RB! Surely this isn't a new problem but one we all have been dealing with for years and we all turned out ok! If a "responsible" dog owner picks up the pooh what happens to it then? It gets moved to somewhere else and brushed under the proverbial carpet quietly nestling in a plastic bag for wildlife to contend with. Personally I think leave it where it lies and help the ecology of our dying planet which most seem intent on destroying.

Dog poo can pass on some nasty illnesses especially to young kids, so for example letting your dog poo over the football playing area on the rec would be wrong unless you clear it up straight away.
We've all trodden in it from time to time but it's different on a playing field where you might be diving on the ground a lot, especially if your role model is Gareth Bale. (ha ha off day against Fulham last week!)
