Bird of Prey
- KL (24th Feb 2013 - 19:36:49)
Has anyone else in the Conford/Passfield/Lindford area noticed the rather large bird of prey living in the area? Have seen it most days in the last couple of weeks, usually swooping across us as we drive near the Waterside estate but also spotted in the trees. Much bigger than a sparrowhawk and we were just wondering what it was.

Hi KL,
It's most probably a Buzzard, think they're the most common bird of prey to see around here.
They're that bit bigger and you can tell them by the quite rounded shape of their tail feathers. I often see them perching along the side of the A3 :)
This website might be handy as it shows some silhouettes of UK birds of prey so maybe one will look familiar:

I can't help with what it is but it swooped infront of my car when I was driving past the entrance to Old Thorns on the Longmoor Road last week and it was huge! I wondered if it had escaped from somewhere at the time.

Have seen them quite frequently over the last few years. We saw five at one time (towards the end of last year) in the Passfield/Bramshott area.

There are quite often three or four buzzards flying above the fields around the Devils Lane area. Lovely to watch. About three weeks ago, I had to swerve to avoid a low flying bird of prey as I was going into Fernhurst. Made us jump!

How do we train it to fly around the village taking out the pigeons? It would be very handy if we could :)

The one at passfield comes to stay on the same branch at exactly the same time of year each year,he stays till the beginning of May,and then it goes,it's beautiful!

A friend of mine (who would recognise one) has also without doubt seen a red kite in the area recently. Has anyone else spotted one?

I know of 3 other people who have also had separate sightings of a huge bird of prey in this locality. They are familiar with common buzzards and kites but say this is noticeably bigger. Possibly an escapee or rough legged buzzard ?

The only thing that springs to mind was a sea eagle was found in hampshire a few years ago that had strayed from finland i think it was a juvenile but still huge!! i saw it myself and it makes a buzzard look small! Rare but not unthinkable!!!
A farmer was feeding it roadkill and it stayed in the area for a while...

The bird you have been seeing is a Red Kite. I saw it at the old thorns turning last week taking some road kill. Seems that it is resident!
