Liphook - A town of the future 1974
- Paul (24th Feb 2013 - 18:40:16)
Hi all,
I've just happened across an old magazine article my mum had kept for years titled Liphook - A town of the future, and dated September 1974. It includes an aerial photo of the village centre which but for the addition of the roundabouts, looks largely unchanged.
The one thing that has foxed me though is an enormous building on the corner of the Square and Longmoor Road basically in The Anchor's car park? It looks almost as big as the Anchor itself!
I'm sure someone here can shed some light on it for me as I was only three at the time of the article.

Do you know, I've wondered about that building for a while. I have a few old postcards that show little bits and pieces of it. No full shots at it though.

I remember this building well; it was indeed the annexe for the Anchor and if I recall correctly it was used for staff accommodation.
This was before the roundabouts were constructed and the Headley Road and Longmoor roads were awkward junctions with the A3. The A3 in those days was an accident nightmare, with frequent and serious crashes all the way from Bramshott Chase, down to the Sussex boundary, just before the Black Fox.
I don't ever remember a dentist being in this particular building, Phil Boulton if he is still in business, was in the Headley Road.
The Anchor vacated the building and then it was demolished.
Came back to Liphook on a day out back in the summer, I was amazed to find Don still running his shoe repair business!

Ah thank you all,
I thought I was going mad! Any idea when it was demolished as the more I think about it, the more I think I can remember it! The old mind isn't quite what it used to be of course!!
If it was built at the same time as the Anchor, I'm surprised it got demolished so seemingly easily. It also explains the tight S bend at the beginning of Longmoor road which was necessary to join the new junction the building made way for, with the existing road.
What a shame even our local history is forgotten so quickly!

Bit of a guess, but going on my memory, I think it would have been about 1975 - 1976 ish.
It got demolished for the road improvement scheme, which rebuilt the junctions with mini roundabouts as you see now.
I presume the building was sold to or purchased by Hampshire County Council. That was back in the days when County Councils had some money and this was many years before the bypass was built.

How interesting, I have often heard my grandmother talk of this building. As far as I remember(and my memory may serve me wrong) I think she refered to it as the original "Ship House"
I know the connection of the bank, having used to be a pub called the ship etc. and of course why LVS used to be called Ship House Surgery.
Is there any truth in this old building being called "Ship House"?

I don't think the Anchor annexe was ever known as Ship House, which was the building at the other side of the square, now Lloyds Bank.
There was a dental practice in the annexe in the '50s, being that of a Mr Wynne-Jones.
