Thank goodness only about 30 mintues this time... but can anyone shed any light (scuse the pun) on why Liphook and surrounding area suffers with interruptions to the power supply so frequently?? I've lived in a number of places throughout the UK and never experienced such power problems before coming here. It can't be explained by inclement weather either.
What's the problem here? Aren't we included in the 21st century?!

I think it's because the power cables come into the village on overhead lines which run through woods so they get hit by falling trees a lot.
You quickly learn to keep torches to hand and even a few candle sticks for the romantic types.
Personally, having moved from the London a few years back I still like it, I guess it plays to my country idyll stereotypes.
Sit back, have a glass of wine and feel sorry for the poor engineers frantically rushing off to the woods to try and fix it!

I vaguely remember a few years ago (probably after the last big "hurricanes") that the electricity people made a lot of effort to cut branches back from power lines to stop this kind of fault. My guess is that they need to do a similar activity again.

Ok so another 30 mins outage tonight - suspicously at the same time as last night? Any rumours / thoughts on what the problem is?!

Well another power cut tonight and at about exactly the same time and for the same duration as last night!!!
Personally I don't find it in any way plays to an 'idyll of a pastoral life' and in fact think it's totally unacceptable and whoever is responsible for electricity in this area should get their act together!!!
Also I missed half of Eggheads which is one of the few programmes worth watching nowadays... :(

I am pretty sure that Liphook is due for some essential maintainance on the electricity supply which I think I'd be right in saying is scheduled for overnight on 1st March if memory serves.
I wonder if this 'blips' are in preperation for that!

I totally disagree, my teenagers actually loved it , for once no TV, candles everywhere , log fire burning, was hoping it would last longer. I suggest we get ought to get used to it as power is going to become a real problem in the future. A lot of people will remember the cuts in the 1970's, we all survived them.

Liphook always was bad - a lot of the supply is overhead. Back in the year we had the "Big Storm" - 1987 was it?, we lived down the Haslemere Road and that part of Liphook had no power for SIX weeks. It got a bit depressing and my wife was cooking up soup etc., for the elderly residents who lived close by, on a camping stove.
After that, I got a 2kw petrol generator from South of England Caravans, (they used to be behind the Jet garage on the Portsmouth Road).
I got an electrician to install a mains change over switch and then no more power cuts ever. The generator ran all the usual household things, but not a kettle or immersion. It was a Godsend.
I've got the same set up now where I live and it's come in handy, but it's imperative to get a qualified electrician to install a change over switch. Not a DIY job under any circumstances.

Not *fun* when you rely on medical equipment indoors which relies on electricity to run. Also not *fun* for 6 hours on Christmas day 2 years ago. Also not fun when the power outages last for hours, not minutes. Try living in Passfield :)

The brief power cuts that are so common in Liphook probably are branches of the trees touching the, probably 11kV down, lines and tripping the breakers. The automatic recloser quickly restores the power, within a couple of seconds.
These two power cuts were, at a guess, something going on at the 132kV/33kV substation. On the 33kV side. Or maybe at the 33kV/11kV substation.
You wouldn't believe how shonky the equipment can be. A lot of it is still 60's. Most of it leaks oil like there's no tomorrow. The amount of times I've seen transformers that are at risk of exploding is surprising........
Don't take it as gospel because I'm not an electrical engineer, but I've worked in loads of Substations of all voltages. And you tend to glean information after a while.
