Mountain Biking
- Mike Brown (23rd Nov 2007 - 23:15:26)
Does anyone know if the Forestry Commission land at Coldharbour Woods near Rake (just off the 'Old A3' is legally accessible for Mountain Biking? I have ridden here and it's great with a lovely decent which brings you out on the road to Milland. However, I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to be doing this. Most other Forestry Commission land (Alice Holt etc.) seems fairly bike friendly but I can't even see an entry for Coldharbour Woods on the FC Website. I'd appreciate any info.

Mike,
No idea about Coldharbour Wood, but if you call Forest Enterprise (Forestry Comm. ) at Alice Holt I'm sure they will let you know.

Know that descent very well, we have been over there many times without any issues I\'m sure if there was a polite word would be enough - In my experience Forestry Commission land is normally accessible to non motorised sports, keep up the Biking.

Thanks for the replies. This is one of loads of great rides in the area. We're really lucky to have so many Bridleways and Byways round here where you can ride decent distances without having to ride on the main roads - other parts of the county aren't so lucky. Anyone interested in posting interesting routes on this forum? I'm a big fan of the Bridleways between the Deers Hut and the Old A3 and then beyond to the Iron Hill area; and also the Bramshott Common/Ludshott Common/Waggoners Wells area - especially when it's a bit muddy!!

I understand that one can traverse a BYWAY open to all traffic with a mountain bike but I thought a bridleway was legally accesible only for horses and perhaps walkers only , as a mountain bike is classed as a road vehicle, but perhaps a legal eagle will put me right!

No, Bridleways are OK for cyclists but footpaths aren't (even if you are walking your bike). Thankfully there are loads of Bridleways and Byeways in the area in addition to the mass of footpaths so there's plenty of room for everyone.
