It is the army training and it is cannon fire! You may well have heard it again. It is not fired often but on occasion!

What about 7am this morning. I jumped out of bed, running around like chicken-liken shouting "mummy, mummy, the sky is falling in". Then realised that I'm a 47 year old bloke, stark-b@&lock naked, not living with my mum anymore and just scared the living daylight out of my kids who had slept through world war 3.
Dave could have been right, but I think it was the jaw hitting the floor from my mates on another table in the deers hut who had just got a bill for 14 quid for 4 coffees !!! (This is when I like social media - customer and consumer pressure - for those wondering what I mean see another thread !! Do you like what I've done there ......)
Cheers, Finchie

Do they know something we don't..... Is Liphook being bombed, are they getting ready for war?!
I live on the other side of Liphook, near the station, and (10.30pm monday), definately just felt the room shake from one very loud bang! Dog is now hiding behind the sofa.
What on earth are they doing?! It's highly antisocial to do it so late night / early morning as well.

We are surrounded on all sides by army training ground, do you think that a loud noise is too much to ask when our troops are preparing too go to war situations all over the world.
Get real.... they need to train as realistically as they can
What would you have them do, shout bang instead just so you have an unbroken sleep ?

S
You have obviously not lived in the area very long. Loud noises from the army training are nothing unusual here. You will get used to it (and the Chinooks!). If it is any comfort they appear to have periods of high activity (major training sessions no doubt) and then it all goes quiet so I would not expect the loud bangs to continue indefinitely.

Liz,
I have lived in Liphook nearly 25 years.
This current period of high activity seems to be rather louder and at more unsociable hours than ever before. The bangs have never made the room shake before. I am well acclimatised to chinooks hovering above the house at all times of day and understand their need to obviously train realistically, but if they need to make such a racket while training in the dark may I point out that it gets dark before 5pm at the moment so theres no need to do it in the middle of the night.
Honestly don't understand the need for people to start accusing people of being newcomers to the village just for commenting on their view of the situation!

Welcome to Liphook talkback, S. There are some really nice people on here, some who think they're funny who really are not, some who think they're not funny but really are, some who'll get the wrong end of the stick at every possible opportunity and some who'll simply drive you up the wall.
It's generally a fantastic site, really useful and often informative. But it's also bonkers in its own way and you can find yourself being lambasted purely for having an honest point of view.
Good here, isn't it?

What an odd response. Not sure what you mean by "accusing" people of being newcomers to the village- as if there was something wrong with that. I was trying to be helpful and reassure that the loud bangs would not continue indefinitely - a waste of time obviously.

Sorry Andy. I'll stop just trying to brighten people's day and distract from the inane squabbling that goes on here.

I would like to re assure the residents of Liphook we are putting forward a request to all waring countrys that we should only fire guns and make loud noises between 9am and 5 pm to coincide with regular working hours.
We can then train during these hours and not effect residents evenings
( PS also trying to gets a POETS day included + bank holidays and weekends)
Until then WE LOVE IT LOWD

Re: loud bang
- jen (7th Feb 2013 22:34:16)
ok so the thread started by me was really because the bang was a oneoff unusally loud for the army and i was concerned as it was windy that night that a tree may have come down on a house or similiar and was concerned for the people concerned.
Obviously it was the army !!! as it had happened since and i wouldnt stop them training for all the tea in china as they protect us and need to learn how to protect themselves too.
they do a wonderful job and even though it is very noisy sometimes and the house and windows shake!! they were here first!! and we knew that when we moved to liphook
thank you

- Pam (8th Feb 2013 18:49:50)
Well said Jen. Your posting puts everything in perspective. However to those people who have complained in response to your original and very understandable posting, about loud bangs at unsocial hours I would just say this. Try imagining what it is like for the family and friends of loved ones serving in Afghanistan or any war zone. My daughter did a tour of Afghanistan with the Royal Engineers in the bomb disposal squad as a IED seacher. If they had to experience that, then they would know all about interrupted sleep. When the oomplainers are in their homes safe and sound, they should spare a thought for our Armed Forces who preserve that safety and the men and women who risk and lose their lives for it. So I think the odd bang or noise is not too high a price to pay. They have to train in as realistically as possible. In conclusion the Longmoor Army Training Camp was probably here before these residents who are complaining moved to the area. I have lived in the area for 37 years and the army was here long before that.

The sound was and is very similar to that of our typhoon fighter jets breaking the sound barrier. The 'Sonic-boom' effect is often misconstrued for a bomb or explosion from a cannon or tank.

Heard a loud Boom-A-Bang-Bang today. Was worried but then realized it was just Lulu on my Ipod.
