Disused well or drainage sump
- Carol (27th Jan 2013 - 13:44:44)
During the snow my daughter discovered a hole in our garden when her foot fell into it. Thinking it was overactive moles etc (though we have no other mole signs), we have waited for the snow to go to investigate further.
It seems she was lucky not to have hurt herself seriously as it appears we have a disused well or drainage sump in our garden, and pulling back the thin layer of turf around it we can see the brickwork beneath.
Just wondered if anyone knew the history for this in the area (we are in Chalcraft Close in the area backing onto houses from Longmore Road). Plus best way to deal with this. Hoping we can just fill it in, though I think animal tunnels and all the rain are the reasons it has come to light.

A lot of the older houses in Liphook had their own wells. We have a splendid one in our garden.
It's quite deep and the internal brick work is rounded...does yours look like that? Ours is covered by a metal man-hole cover and is quite safe. I wouldn't dream of filling it in!!
Why don't you contact the Heritage Centre to see if there are any records of wells in your area that belonged to an old house that may have been pulled down ?
