Help!!
- Eneida Nelson (19th Mar 2004 - 08:39:19)

I'm glad there are so many computer experts in Liphook because I need some help. I've bought a Canon Smart Base MP360 scanner/printer/copier. I can do all the usual stuff with it, but I particularly want to be able to edit and print old photos (not of Julie Felix). The reference guide for this function assumes all sorts of knowledge I haven't got. Does anyone know of a book I could buy that explains all this in a language normal people (like gardeners) could understand ?

Eneida -

Need a bit more info to help.

Also, have you gone online and looked at the Canon website help area?

Presume the machine came with some free image edit software? If not, there are lots of applications you can find on the web or buy from our local PC shop.

Eneida - the short answer is no i'm afraid. If you're after help with one specific Canon printer the easiest thing is to look through the manual. Canon online support is dreadful.

In terms of books about using printers, copiers, scanners and image editing you'd probably find some useful info in the "complete dummies guide to" or "idiots guide to" range, which is easy to understand and carried in places like waterstones etc.

The way most people do it is to simply scan in the photo (by putting it into the printer face down as if you were going to photocopy it) and use the supplied software to get it onto the computer as a JPEG image or something similiar. Once its on, you just need to open the image with a standard image-editing program and make your changes.

You can use the software Canon gave you with the printer or something that allows you to do a bit more - e.g. Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Photoshop (recommended), Macromedia Fireworks etc. There are books on using all these in your local store or amazon.co.uk. Other than that, you just have to play with it and find out!

Eneida,

It sounds like you may find "Photo Retouching & Restoration For Dummies" useful.

http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/productCd-0764516620.html

It can be bought for £15.75 here :

http://www.whsmith.co.uk/whs/go.asp?isbn=0764516620&db=220&shop=26985

If you have mainstream image editing software (such as Photoshop 7) then "Dummies" will have a book specifically for it.

There is a dummies book for just about everything these days, even one for Freddie here :

http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/productCd-0764553208.html

and "Pregnancy For Dummies, 2nd Edition" at 408 pages makes one think. - Whatever was wrong with the 1st edition?

http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/productCd-0764544837.html

I hope this helps,

Mike.

Anybody know what this has got to do with the price of cheese ?

Re: Help!!

You're a bit out of your depth here Allan, copy and paste is in book two, hyperlinks are in book three ;).

Oh and emoticons are in book seven :-)

Re: Help!!

I can add a few for anyone reading this thread too, from my own experience working in tech support and other people's...

- 'Closing the window' does not mean shutting the door and keeping the heat in
- The CD-ROM is not a drinks tray
- If nothing is on the screen, it means the computer's not plugged in

etc etc ad nauseam...

Re: Help!!
- Eneida Nelson (23rd Mar 2004 - 07:35:19)

Thank you all for your inputs, you've all been very helpful except the gentleman interested in cheese. A drop too much of the old "organic" perhaps??

I'm investigating the Dummies books, there're hundreds of them! I've also been given a programme called Live Pix which although very old, does have a very good tutorial giving the basics I wanted to know, the only downside is a very irritating American female narrator.

So I am working my way through this in between some very vital pricking out in my greenhouse, because as Freddie will know, it's that time of the year.

without wanting to sound as ignorant and crass as i normally do, what exactly is "pricking out"?

Is there a dummies guide, and can young people do it?

Eneida -

please don't rise to this ::--))))

Celeriac's are looking good; Beets a bit stringy; Toms excellent, likewise with Peppers.

Alex dear, I suggest you ask your mummy to explain!!

Can't get very excited about vegetables - I'm strictly a flowers person, although I do gather my own seeds and do it organically - I squirt pests with Fairy liquid!

Tut tut, anionic surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulphate cannot be truly organic, can they?

ahaa!

3. Pricking out
---------------------------------
Take the seedling and plant it in its own 7.5cm (3in) pot of seed compost. Gently firm it into position and water in. Place in a warm, frost-free, well-lit location, remembering to turn the pot daily if it's on a windowsill.
