Deer's Hut service charge
- Helen (20th Jan 2013 - 09:20:44)
Went to the bar to pay for a light meal and I had to ask for an itemised receipt as I thought it was too much, I discovered a discretionary service charge had been added and charged to my card....not overly happy about this so asked for a refund, if we'd eaten in the restaurant and received service I would have been happy to! I also think they should tell you or at least show you this charge before taking it...?

...and what did they say when you asked them to explain?

Quite agree.
I took my family for lunch there and the service was all over the place with one person getting their main course 15 mins before everyone else. The food was great but I had to ask that the service charge be removed. There was no problem with this and they were very apologetic about the service.
Would be much easier if a tip could be left at the end of the meal or is the service charge shared out between all the staff perhaps, not just the waitress?

I had a similar issue with them, before Xmas, when visiting with my daughter.
They added a service charge, which is usual for London[ not here].
I asked for it to be removed, explaining that if I wished to tip, I would do, but did not want this imposed on me.
We received nothing 'special' for this, such as bread & water etc.
however we did get abrupt service from the bar man who thought it perfectly ok to 'bark' at us, when we were waiting for our bill & to pay, hence my refusal with this charge!
I think the customers are clearly being asked to pay for the refurb.!

I had the same problem. I almost paid the service charge, and then tip on top, until i queried the bill, as I thought it was a bit too much for what we had. When I asked for the charge to be removed, I was asked why I wanted it removed. I answered that it is a discretionary service charge, therefore I wanted to use my dicretion. That i do not like to be told how much i will tip, I like to decide how much I will leave. The waitress came back with the amended bill, and slammed it on the table. I gave a tip to the barman, but not to the waitress whos behaviour was frankly appauling. The service was not great, the food ok, but very small portions of veg and mash.I have not been back. I have heard so many complain of the service charge, i think they should scrap it. Not on at all.

I have to say that they've got a lot of things right at the Deers Hut but the discretionary service charge is horrendous. If it wasn't my local it would put me off from ever going back there again. They should also provide bread as a cover - the starters are quite small portions for the price and should be served with bread in my opinion.

I accept that service comes at a cost, but why on earth is that not factored into the prices charged for the food? You don't get clobbered by extra charges anywhere else; the price you see is the price you pay. Can you imagine people getting to the checkout at Sainsburys and being charged an extra fee for the maintenance and upkeep of the trolleys, or to top up the salaries of the cleaners?! Of course not, so why should a restaurant be any different?
