The Clock Shop
- Sue W (2nd Nov 2007 - 18:49:00)
Very sad today, Paul who took over the Clock Shop in Station Road, said 'Goodbye' today. He leaves tomorrow to run his business from Alton.
He has become a good friend and we shall miss him. Fortunatley we can catch up with him in the Summer months as he caravans where we do.
I have it under good authority that Mr Ayling is to return. So the business will remain open.
Best wishes Paul and good luck.

Good news that the business will remain in good hands. At least it is something that Sainsburys can't compete with (yet).

The problem is - how often does one need to buy a clock? It is difficult to support local trade when you don't need their products...

I always thought a good, well thought out stationery shop would be an asset to Liphook. Much like the one in godalming (workstation).

I think that basic stationary is sold by the supermarkets, and some sold by the computer shop also. Most business users would fill up the stationary cupboard via viking. The cost of petrol is so high that it is cheaper to shop for things via the internet unless it is for small items. The business rates put most people off running a shop these days.

Godalming has (within walking distance)...2 supermarkets, 1 newsagents, wh smiths and workstation.
The point I am trying to make is that I am making an example of this company because they also supply stationery to Business users,as well as the shop & have a delivery service.
A local company supplying local customers & business users with this service, I feel would be successful in Liphook. We have numerous Business Parks within it's vacinity.
Yes ,Sainsburys have a limited line in Stationery but it is expensive.
Not only could a business service supply Liphook, you're also looking at the outer hamlets which include 2 large business parks, Liss,Petersfield,Whitehill/Bordon.
[editor - Blackwell Press, Newtown Road, 01428 724422 - have a wide range of stationery available - not sure if Oliver will deliver though !]

Yes, I have too thought and seriously considered changing my shop to a comprehensive stationery shop, BUT as the editor already mentioned we do have a reasonable one - albeit not as widely stocked, as I would like it to be. There would be no point in duplicating something so close - and as we traders still work in the old way of not treading on others toes - wouldn’t do it. But if larger stores like JS and countrywide fill their shops with everyone else’s things - perhaps the gloves should come off. Unfortunately, you would alienate half of the population and be on a losing streak. The Newsagents in the Square also stock Stationery. So perhaps it is a case of people not looking/seeing what is and has been here for a very long time?
