Liphook Service Station
- Ken Addison (1st Nov 2007 - 00:10:53)

Another business bites the dust ! Liphook Service Station opens for the last time on 4 Nov 2007. As an employee I would like to thank all the loyal customers who stayed with us for the last 27 years, and not defected to JS. Good luck and good motoring.

Very sorry to see you go. Once again less choice for consumers. But the Competition Commission in its wisdom has decided that supermarkets don't hurt local businesses!!!

It's so frustrating. Liphook is going to revolve even more around the place begining with 'S'.

Though I'll tell you one thing. I'm not getting petrol from the 'S', I'll be going to Shell on the A3 or other stations I happen to pass.

Am I correct in saying its now going to be developed into flats? Oh joy.

- Sue W (1st Nov 2007 - 19:35:21)

Yes, the Jet is to be flats. If you have been into or intend to go there before Sunday (providing their stocks last), you can see a 'picture' of what it will look like. Quite nice but not a Petrol Station.

This is just another facility that we have lost, and are now totally unbalanced in choice - more and more like 'Sainsburyville'. For a growing community it should be a worry. Earlier this week the 'super supplier' ran out of Diesel, no probs send them to the Jet, what will happen when they sell out of more - I strongly advise people to acquaint themselves with a good supplier now before your stuck - what happens if there is another strike, and only 'regular' customers will be served like in the past - the staff at the Jet knew their customers - would the 'S' doubt it. Also make sure you have enjoyable music in you cars while waiting for the wash. Happy days!

Liz, as for the Competition Commission, that is another thread, and should be discussed. But from their point of view another supermarket here would give the existing one 'competition' - bring it on!!

It would appear that the above rule is being used selectively, as there is sue w rhys g etc. still being used. Is EDITOR also being banned?

Another supermarket??? !!! The traffic (and, dare I say it, innapropriate design) associated with one is more than enough. We need smaller more individual shops to provide real competition. It seems not many people are prepared to take on the supermarkets and to be honest I can't blame them. I think it was the cc in association with the government who believed (not sure it is stilll policy) that putting a supermarket in the centre of a town/village would protect local shops(!)
Probably the same sort of ?logic that makes a straight banana a good idea because its easier to pack.

Re: Liphook Service Station

Liz

The fact is we need an alternative supermarket here. I personally (and I know of many others), who find the one we have very lacking in many departments. Please do not get me started. Supermarkets are supposed to be convenient, but for me it is not, and desperately miss the supermarket we had. I am not asking for more than we have been used to for the past 7 years. The problem is now that many people are shopping in other areas (as people did before), and supporting other businesses. The whole concept of building a second one, was to stop this happening, and it worked very effectively for a number of years. The problem is that supermarkets have changed what they sell - to gain a larger part of the market and have become the major competition. Unfortunately the CC did not address this issue, but instead looked more at the lack of competition some supermarkets have in some areas and deemed that to provide better competition they need competition. The fact is no matter how many small providers there are, they will never compete, yes they may well have a regular supportive sector, but in today’s and more so in the future this just will not be enough. Hence we are seeing more and more small traders closing, and not just in the food industry.

I was reading a 'projected' forecast done from 3 of the leading retail sectors and quite frankly it is depressing - we will see more big names buying small family size businesses in the high streets and keeping the name, thereby the customers will be unaware. There will be more mirror images of high streets everywhere and choice will only be available from different supermarkets.

Everyone agreed that the 'specialist' stores will always have a niche, but even for those to work they have to be close enough to each other to survive. How many 'old' parts of towns have you seen the odd specialist shop isolated within closed ones and eventually they have to close or move, which puts a financial strain on them and makes it suicidal.

Did you notice the town the news used to highlight the CC report, had a very similar story to Liphook? They had a JS and lost all their butchers, greengrocers and small grocery stores. You may like the 'old' way of shopping, but unfortunately it wont be back!! (Just for the record I too would like things to remain the same, but if nothing else I realise that is not what the majority of shoppers do)

Re: Liphook Service Station
- liz (7th Nov 2007 - 11:10:45)

Sue

I like the new way of shopping not the old way. The new way being a greater choice from niche shops, farmers markets etc which is happening in many areas. Not another supermarket where the goods are mostly identical. Most people use a car for the major weekly shop or even order over the internet - meaning there is a huge choice of supermarkets within the local area.

Re: Liphook Service Station
- Sue W (7th Nov 2007 - 19:28:15)

Sorry, must have confused you with the Liz that keeps wanting a local butchers, and greengrocers and has made comments that the service in the one supermarket here leaves a lot to be desired. There is NO Choice here now - and yes people do travel to other supermarkets - I feel I am banging my head on a brick wall!!

Amazed to find Sainsbury's petrol station only opens 10-4 on Sundays.

While in no way do I want to open up a debate on Sunday trading, I would have expected that the only service station in the village would have trading hours more akin to that of (say) the co-op than of the Sainsbury's food(andotherthings)- store and I would be surprised if the Jet didn't open longer than that.

You could always use the Shell south on the by pass. 24 hr opening, Quality fuel, and franchise owned by a Liphook resident.

Re: Liphook Service Station
- liz (19th Nov 2007 - 16:22:32)

What are the prices like? (I suppose I could go and look!) - Diesel at Shell in Bordon was over 106p/litre.

[editor - you can see local prices here http://url.co.uk/x3498

Sainsburys and Shell (A3) are the same price and are the cheapest for unleaded (99.9)within 10 miles of Liphook

Cheapest diesel is Royal Parade Stores & Filling Station, Hindhead at 101.9, Sainsburys and Shell are 103.9]

I notice that the site vehicles are doing a most excellent job of making it as difficult as possible to get past!! How fabulous of them.....

Just what you need when you re already running late for the train.

I thought these applications where only passed if they where forced to park ‘on-site’ – I mean – I thought that was usually a planning condition?

Re: Liphook Service Station
- Dawn Hoskins (4th Dec 2007 - 13:37:32)

I see that hoarding has been put up all around the site. I suppose that is an improvement – I just wish they would get their vehicles off the road.

Re: Liphook Service Station
- Sue W (4th Dec 2007 - 19:15:16)

Dawn

I think you are going to be in for a lot more than at present. Just imagine the Cement lorries, roofing lorries, brick deliveries, fixtures and fittings - the site is just not large enough for them to work - unless they use the road. There are going to be times when the larger ones will be IN the road backing their goods onto the site. Then you will have all the different 'trades' personel together with their supervisors.

I know what you are saying, but prepare for more - not less!.

I have been looking at the conditions of development and note the following:

"11) Details of the provisions to be made for the parking and turning on site of operatives and construction vehicles during the construction period shall be submitted to and approved by the Planning Authority in writing and fully implemented before development commences. Such measures shall be retained for the duration of the construction period.
Reason In the interests of highway safety."

I haven’t seen their “provision report”, but I wonder if the provisions within it are being adhered too.

There are a lot of conditions on this development, so keep an eye on them to see if they breach any of them!

Re: Liphook Service Station
- Dawn (11th Dec 2007 - 12:21:13)

Conditions!!

What a joke, even if there were parking/turning on site provisions - who is going to enforce it?

I'm glad I don't live next door - how on earth can they pull out of their driveways AND see if anything is coming.

Re: Liphook Service Station
- Karen Feeney (20th Dec 2007 - 20:12:18)

Ooohhhh! Yes, the residents of Portsmouth Road are revolting.... we cannot get out of our drives without nearly being hit or hitting something/someone with all the very large construction vehicles parked outside our houses. Thank goodness the holiday season is upon us and the site workers will be away for a while - driving me up the wall with the van to van to car to car to lorry parking 'up our road'. On a brighter note, we still have our beautiful view across the frosty fields of Bohunt Manor to keep us calm and remind us how lovely Liphook is.....Merry Christmas to you all!! xxx
