Anchor tree
- Natalie (31st Jul 2016 - 22:10:53)

Hi

Any news on the tree??

Re: Anchor tree
- Finchie (1st Aug 2016 - 07:56:11)

Patience now. The acorn was only buried a couple of months ago !

Good Weekend ?!? Finchie

Re: Anchor tree
- Jane Ives, Parish Councillor (1st Aug 2016 - 08:29:48)

I spoke to Greene King about this a few weeks ago and they confirmed that to ensure the tree remains healthy it will be planted later in the Autumn.

The stone surround will be removed but it will be planted in roughly the same place.

Re: Anchor tree
- liz (1st Aug 2016 - 10:35:44)

Look forward to i!

Re: Anchor tree
- Natalie (2nd Aug 2016 - 18:36:19)

"Roughly" the same place??

Sounds a bit vague.....

Re: Anchor tree
- Mark (19th Nov 2016 - 19:17:11)

Hi Jane,
Can you please update us on the tree as Autumn is coming to a close.

Re: Anchor tree
- Dawn Hoskins (19th Nov 2016 - 22:46:30)

Liz, Natalie, Mark - why not go into the pub and ask or email Greene King - go straight to the horses mouth.

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (20th Nov 2016 - 10:39:59)

Dawn, can't you do it for us? It's far easier to be a concerned resident from the comfort of ones own home using a keyboard. Why do something yourself when there is always someone else to do it for you, same with the Carnival, it's a lot easier to get others to do something to make it bigger than actually get off ones BFA and do it yourself! Isn't that why the Internet was invented. So please could all you "doers" carry on doing so the rest of us can carry on setting the village to rights on our keyboards

Re: Anchor tree
- liz (20th Nov 2016 - 11:50:34)

Dawn, my post was in August!! Not exactly fretting about it.

Re: Anchor tree
- liz (20th Nov 2016 - 11:58:22)

I seem to remember we were asked not to inundate Greece King with emails and Jane would keep us informed which she has.....but no harm in asking for an update.

Re: Anchor tree
- Dawn Hoskins (20th Nov 2016 - 12:50:01)

I need a 'smily face' emoticon!!

Re: Anchor tree
- Jane Ives (20th Nov 2016 - 14:00:27)

Me again!

OK hot off the press from Greene King is that the tree will be replaced at the end of November (ie very soon). Currently awaiting the tree to arrive from Europe.

Watch this space....I will keep everyone informed :)

Re: Anchor tree
- Resident (20th Nov 2016 - 20:29:31)

I may be missing something here but why oh why do we have to wait for a tree from Europe? Surely we have enough native trees to choose from !

Re: Anchor tree
- liz (21st Nov 2016 - 11:48:52)

Resident - yes you are missing something. There was a vote in the village to decide on the type of tree for the square. The vote was for a variety of Chestnut that is not a UK native.

It is similar to the Horse Chestnut (not a true native itself) that had to be removed, but less prone to disease. There was reasonably detailed information on the pro's and con's of the proposed trees. Its all on this website somewhere!

This thread S.O.S Anchor tree

Re: Anchor tree
- liz (21st Nov 2016 - 16:33:59)

Also "Vote NOW for a new tree in the Square".

Looking back the Horse Chestnut was preferred but an Indian Chestnut (which is similar, to my untrained eye) was decided upon, I believe because of the disease issues.

Re: Anchor tree
- Simon A (21st Nov 2016 - 19:47:59)

Actually the sweet chestnut won the vote, but that was ignored and a horse chestnut was decided which wasn't even one of the choices offered to the public.

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (22nd Nov 2016 - 08:05:01)

As the EU referendum and US election has shown, the public don't always get it right when asked to vote!

Re: Anchor tree
- Susan (22nd Nov 2016 - 09:55:22)

The majority do Ian - it's called democracy. If you can come up with something better I would love to hear it.

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (22nd Nov 2016 - 10:55:13)

Susan, I don't have any solutions, but the majority opinion is not always correct, blimey the best selling newspapers in the land are The Daily Mail and Sun!!!!! ;-) Maybe we need an 'enlightened despot' to guide us through these troubled times. (and choose the right tree for Liphook)

Re: Anchor tree
- Paul Robinson (22nd Nov 2016 - 11:24:27)

"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

Winston S. Churchill

Re: Anchor tree
- Susan (22nd Nov 2016 - 13:34:00)

Wise and true words from Winston Churchill. In my experience it is those who criticise who are the least likely to put forward any constructive alternative ideas for change. Likewise those who criticise people in public service are the people least likely to offer their services particularly if it is in a voluntary capacity.

Re: Anchor tree
- Lizzy (30th Nov 2016 - 11:53:58)

There's a digger working, this morning, preparing for the planting of the tree, I assume.
Will there be a ceremony?

Re: Anchor tree
- Diane (30th Nov 2016 - 13:46:29)

Lets hope it will be up for the carol singing.
The next thing is new Christmas lights.

We have had the present ones for years and Liphook in Bloom spend hours maintaining and cleaning them. Thank you very much those volunteers who do it but please could the council not provide some funds towards some new modern ones before the old ones completely fall to bits

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (30th Nov 2016 - 17:06:24)

Diana, are you happy for local taxes to go up. Don't get nothing for nothing, it isn't the council that will pay, it will be all of us.

I've been expecting the usual whinging and moanin to start about Liphook's decorations, there will be lots of "look what grayshott's done blah blah blah" but will anyone actually DO anything other than moan online? Ridiculous amount of moanin last year but not aware that in the last 12 months there has been any talk of fundraising etc.

Re: Anchor tree
- Diane (30th Nov 2016 - 20:01:13)

Ian I am not winging or moaning I am stating a fact. The lights are very old and even with the tender care given to them by Liphook in Bloom they are not going to last forever
We have to start thinking of how to replace them if we want to continue having lights at Christmas The council is one place to look, perhaps some of the bike ride money, some of the carnival money,a grand collection, a grand raffle with local shops and firms giving prizes. What idea's do you have Ian?

Re: Anchor tree
- Steve Wilson (30th Nov 2016 - 20:21:28)

The council can keep expanding the people working in the parish office/millennium hall they don't need extra staff that would pay for the lights and lots of other things.

Re: Anchor tree
- H (30th Nov 2016 - 21:52:13)

I agree with Diane, some of the bike ride or carnival money could be used for new lights when they're needed.

Re: Anchor tree
- Dollypops (30th Nov 2016 - 21:55:47)

I so agree with Diane. Not a complaint but a stitch in time is required. Liphook in Bloom give us so very much pleasure throughout the year. They are astonishing but some things are finite, as in Christmas lights. ..

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (1st Dec 2016 - 08:08:50)

Diane- I'm quite happy with the lights so I will leave it up to those who are not to come up with alternatives. But in these times of austerity maybe we should be content with what we have for the time being

Re: Anchor tree
- Helen (1st Dec 2016 - 10:29:29)

I think the money for the Haslemere lights also came from the local chamber of commerce. After all the businesses in the local area have a vested interest in attracting shoppers to the town. The chamber of commerce organise quite a few of the events in Haslemere which raises a lot of money for local causes and things like the Christmas lights.

Re: Anchor tree
- Rachel (1st Dec 2016 - 11:48:31)

I thought last year, some people of this forum started a collection for new lights? I might be wrong, just thought I remembered people pledging money!

Re: Anchor tree
- H (1st Dec 2016 - 15:00:25)

All the time people continue to take offence at those who quite rightly say the lights are old & outdated , the current lights will stay . People seem to take issue with those who dare to speak out & assume it's a dig at the Liphook in Bloom team . I'm sure the guys and girls would much rather not spend evenings in their cold garages repairing the outdated lights which are and I hate to say it ....naff!

I'd gladly pay extra taxes to see something more pleasing to the eye and modern . Yes look at Grayshott. .they're stunning . Simple and effective . I think we as a Parish need to vote on the issue ready for next year .

Re: Anchor tree
- Dave L (1st Dec 2016 - 19:15:07)

Just a thought, do the council receive revenue for the numerous yellow developement signs attached to posts all over Liphook and the private school banners seen regularily pre new school year which are a blot on the landscape as you enter the village? this could fund replacement of the lights or at least therepairs, if not, can somebody explain why we accept this free advertising to the detriment of our well kept village?.

Re: Anchor tree
- Helen (1st Dec 2016 - 20:24:57)

As stated above the lights are organised by liphook in bloom and the parish council pay the bill to the electricity suppliers for connection and supply. I assume that if liphook in bloom want the lights updated they will apply to the parish council for funding for new lights. Perhaps someone from liphook in bloom will explain why they do not want to get new lights?

Re: Anchor tree
- Ian (2nd Dec 2016 - 09:11:10)

Dave L. Yes they do, developers pay the council for those signs.

Where would you draw the line on advertising banners/signs? For example free knife sharpening, lead works, roofers etc? list is endless so probably not fair just to pick on schools.

Re: Anchor tree
- H (2nd Dec 2016 - 09:48:53)

The money for the yellow signs for developments I think forms part of the 106 agreements from developers, I do not believe the money goes to the Parish Council.

Re: Anchor tree
- dave mcgrath (2nd Dec 2016 - 13:36:45)

editor! thought this thread was about trees not advertising signs! Where is the tree?!
