Yes hear hear time we flew the flag.

Well said Lottie. We must not be bullied or intimidated by "Cancel Culture". It is a slippery slope.

I'm curious about this St George and why he is such a hero of the right in England, just looked him up and from what I can see, if he existed at all, he had a Greek father and a Palestinian mother, he lived and died in the middle east, not sure how that fits the narrative, how did he become an emblem for Englishness and, does anyone really believe he killed a poor old dragon??

I'm all for a good excuse for a pint and I proudly fly the flag, but maybe we should have a Winston Churchill day instead?

The possibility that English residents increasingly come to know more about St Patrick or Ramadan than they do about
St George - clearly illustrates the reason we should celebrate St George's day with more enthusiasm.

Flying St George's flag:
I'd have liked our Parish Council to fly the flag regularly but fear the spiralling costs and blunders local / regional councils inevitably incur.

Instead, I'd like to see a bottom-up initiative by local establishments (shops, businesses, pubs, schools, homes, etc), maybe even by donations, proudly flying the St George flag regularly.
The only other three flags that worth adding to the display are the local Liphook flag (what is it?), Hampshire flag (what is it?), and the Union Jack. Absolutely NO other flag (foreign politics or identity politics) to be considered.

According to Wikipedia, St Edmund used to be our Patron saint he was also a king of England. Apparently he was replaced because of George’s reputed bravery and the English wanted to adopt that I suppose seeing bravery as a national characteristic.
I do not think Liphook has a flag. I think the St George’s flag is flown at Radford bridge although I may be wrong.

Bush-I don't think most people know much about any of the things you mention. They probably do know what's on netflix or how to waste countless hours looking at their phone. That's the culture we have now.

Great post Local. Possibility the first one off yours I enjoyed. Am not sure why the rest of you are basically ignoring the question of “why” If he even existed he certainly had zero links to anything British, perhaps it’s a very old practical joke that now got out of hand.

However I do welcome a celebration, it is a free country so you should celebrate it. But I would question this idea of removing every other flag.

Local,
Good post, but Winston Churchill’s mum was an American. Never mind, let’s make it a Trump day!!
