Job vacancy: Local garden assistant
- DHC (14th Nov 2025 - 16:20:44)
A position has become available for a self-employed, physically able adult to take on a wide range of garden jobs. A few hours weekly or fortnightly. Negotiable rate of pay. Local to Liphook. The successful applicant must be reliable, conscientious, physically fit and keen to work closely with the horticulturist.
Free training, guidance and some equipment available for use.
This is a brilliant opportunity for any gardener to-be to gain considerable gardening experience and learn fine horticultural skills. Work in a friendly and pleasant environment of a private garden. There is plenty of scope for more work for the suitable applicant.
Please contact DHC by emailing: dhcgardens@outlook.com

I thought that zero hours contracts had been made illegal? If someone is self employed they are your contractor surely ?

Joe someone offering a job . In these hard times it’s great that there are jobs to be had especially something you could fit in around more work the time has gone to be nitpicking. You wait till next year when more firms go bust under this government the doll queues with stretch around the block .

Long long ago I was a regular visitor to the Liphook dole office (or Jobcentre whatever) even when in employment I used to drop in once a fortnight. Over time one notices what jobs come round on a regular basis, so regular you ask yourself why they have such a rapid staff turnover. So when I wasn't in employment and looking for a job, those ones I avoided.

This opportunity has been posted by DHC on my behalf with a view to finding a company or self-employed individual/contractor to help the horticulturist who already works in my garden, for a few hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis to be agreed. We have had a lovely contractor doing this, but unfortunately for me, they have recently relocated out of the area. This is not a role that has frequently been advertised, although it is possible that DHC may on occasion have posted similar requests on behalf of other clients in the past; and there is no suggestion that it would involve a zero hours contract.
(Immaterial for this role but just for information given the earlier comment on zero hours contracts: the government is currently proposing to introduce a UK employment rights bill which amongst other measures would include a ban on *exploitative* zero hours contracts. This bill is still under consideration, with an expectation that it will be introduced in 2026 or 2027).

It is good that you clarified this Karen, for the sake of any (I'm guessing) youngsters who may apply, as, although self employed was clearly stated, I think much of the rest, ie the word 'position' could perhaps have been mistaken for a job by a young person, in conjunction with phrases like the heading 'Job vacancy'; 'garden assistant'; 'negotiable rates of pay'; 'Free training, guidance and some equipment available for use.'; '.gardener to be...'' etc
Whereas an up and running self employed garden contractor will probably already have public liability insurance, be registered and pay their own tax and NI etc.
Whatever, any possible confusion is now cleared up and that's the important thing, I hope you find the right person and it works for all of you.
