CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- D (23rd Oct 2025  11:21:45)

The carnival road closures in place for Saturday mean leaving and entering Liphook is forbidden between 18:00hrs to 21:00hrs. For those wishing to leave Liphook that evening, for example shift workers, carers looking after sick relatives on the other side of town, or even people whose Saturday evening social life extends beyond the bounds of Liphook here are some alternative routes.

Those on the south side of Liphook can access the A3 by driving to Hindhead via Haslemere and you can pick up the A3 there. Or you can chance your luck by taking the back road to Milland and access the old A3 opposite the old Black Fox. Not very nice on those narrow twisty roads in the dark with 4x4's bombing down the hill into Milland, but there you go. Those on the north side of Liphook can access the A3 by driving to Bordon to the A325 and pick up the A3 from there.

I was advised by a former member of the carnival committee this morning that I may park my vehicle in the Links carpark any when before 18:00, walk two miles back home, then walk two miles back to the Links later to collect my vehicle to enable me to leave Liphook at my usual time of 20:00hrs. Awfully nice of the Links to allow me to do this but it would mean I get no sleep before my shift.

Hope this helps, if anyone knows of any other routes around Liphook without using one of the six roads that go through the square, please share it with us.

I've got an idea 'D', how about we stop a 120 year tradition for butt-hurt you? Too extreme, ok.... Hmmmm I know! how about you ask the road marshals to just let YOU through where 4000 people including women and children who obviously havn't got a right to enjoy life aren't expecting ANY cars on the roads? Too much? ok... Lets see -

Why sign this message as 'D'??? Is it because you know the reception you'd get?

Ok, lets drill down to it -

You mention “4x4s bombing down the hill into Milland,” which shows you know that bit of road pretty well, sounds like you’ve driven it a fair few times yourself

The way you describe it comes across like you’ve seen it first-hand, not something you’ve just heard from someone else

You clearly know the Haslemere, Milland, and Liphook routes in detail, including all those little back roads only locals use

You say it’d mean walking “two miles back home,” so that puts you roughly two miles from the Links, which points straight towards Haslemere Road

You mention leaving Liphook at 20:00 for your shift, which tells me you rely on your own wheels, not buses or lifts

Put it all together and yeah, you’re clearly based along Haslemere Road and you’ve got yourself a 4x4

We all know... theres only one grumpy, butt-hurt bloke on Haslemere road with a 4X4 who drives like a knob and "bombs it down the road" 'D'!! MAN THE F### UP! and adjust FOR ONE NIGHT!

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Emma (23rd Oct 2025  15:43:27)

Why are you talking to previous carnival committee members lol

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Guy (23rd Oct 2025  15:46:16)

Bit extreme Matt, the man was only giving locals an alternative route -

Whilst being passive agressive to how unfair life is for 1 night a year.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Edith T (23rd Oct 2025  15:56:14)

I am 76 I have lived in Liphook for 55 of them and I have never missed a carnival except through that aweful covid nonsense. It seems theres always a few that can't adjust for one day, thankfully it is just a few. Why this ilk think they're the centre of the universe amazes me.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- paul (23rd Oct 2025  18:41:25)

Hi,

The Berg Estate Liphook, off Midhurst road,
park road side,.
Do not leave cars in-front of driveways.

This is always a good temporary parking to the Carnival.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- D (24th Oct 2025  07:28:20)

Let's "drill down to it."

Emma, because that was the first phone number I saw on the carnival's website, not my fault if they don't keep it updated.

Edith, I have no say in my shift arrangements so it is impossible for me to "adjust for one night". As for your insinuation that I think I am "the centre of the universe", I think that honour should be bestowed upon Liphook Carnival Committee. They will close as many roads as they want regardless to the inconvenience it causes others.

Matt Lynch, spot on, I'm on the Haslemere Road, though I have stated that on previous correspondence on this website so no points there. Yes I do know all these "little back roads that only locals know about" as you call them. Given that everyone else going to work and coming home will also be using them tomorrow evening they will be very busy, no way am I risking that. No, I don't drive a 4x4, all the roads round here have a tarmacadum surface so 4x4's are unnecessary round here other than as a frivolous status symbol. You may be pleased to know, Matt, that as I am unable to get to work at the correct time tomorrow, and that on this occasion it is not possible to rearrange my shifts, I have been given tomorrow's shift off as a freebie. Even better, I'm keeping my shift allowance for the day. Best news of all, as a public sector employee, YOU will be paying this. So Matt, take comfort in the fact that I will be with you somewhere at the carnival and being paid by your good self for doing so. You'll recognize me, I'll be the one laughing loudest of all. 😄

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- A different M (24th Oct 2025  10:39:37)

@D
Well sounds like a win- win situation for you..... so why the moaning??
As for slagging off the Carnival Committee regards closing roads, very harsh on so many counts.
Grow up and accept everything in life might not be perfect....for you anyway!

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Paul2 (24th Oct 2025  11:30:49)

So D - all that moaning, bile and hurling tropes and it actually won't be affecting you on the night?

LOL!

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Edith (24th Oct 2025  11:54:39)

'D' you're clearly new to the area so I'll cut you some slack. I will say, you can't just move to a community and start dictating on what is a 120 year old heritage. Either adjust or move somewhere else.
I for one am embarrassed to call you a neighbour, having spoken about volunteers in this way, you should be ashamed. No wonder you hide your name. I'm glad your cognitive capacity is that of a minority. You're a very rude individual and yes, I'll lower myself to a language you may understand.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- D (24th Oct 2025  12:56:32)

Actually, Edith, I've lived here as long as you. I have not slagged off anyone, all I'm saying is I think the carnival committee very selfish in not considering others with their road closures and I still stand by that regardless of your remarks. The irony is, it was only because my employers read comments such as yours I'm getting tomorrow night off (you won't believe what they said about MY neighbours.) At the end of the day, all I want to do is go to work, and I am being prevented from doing so. But, hey, thanks for the special leave day off, I'm sure we'll all have a jolly old time. 😀

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

My poem 'D'

Called 'Let's look into it'

Daybreak calls and the work must start,
Around the square we’ll play our part...
Ropes and rails, the heavy load,
Rattling down the village road...
Early risers, few but keen,
Never shy of a grafting scene...

Lantern light to guide the way,
Ahead of dawn’s first stretch of day...
No moans, just mugs of tea in hand,
True to the task, we make our stand...
Every job done, the square will gleam,
Ready and set for the Carnival dream...
Now that’s the spirit of the team.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Edith (24th Oct 2025  15:59:38)

Oh Mr 'D'

I truly hope your 'Employers' do read this 😀 if not, do pass this communication on.

Dear mr 'D's employer,
You've given mr 'D' the night off at (as he gloats - taxpayers expense). This is indeed your call, but know this. This individual is representing you and your company, even more worryingly - for the sake of turning left and heading to Haslemere, up Upper Hammer lane and onto the A3 near the Mercedes garage, or even to the hindhead traffic lights, thus adding an extra 7 minutes to his journey he has decides it too dark or unsafe to travel to work.
I am not sure of the implications and impact of this, or even if his presence will be missed but I'm sure theres an impact on someone getting the care they may need.

Nonetheless, I truly hope you review the bounds in which you grant time off and ask 'has everything reasonable been done by this individual to get to work'.
Regards
E

P.S note how he labels volunteers as 'selfish' for legally closing off the roads to protect thousands of spectators.
Again, this person is representing you.

- James (24th Oct 2025  16:04:37)

'D'
My cousin on on the committee, I've passed your message to him.

The obvious indicator in Anthony's 'poem' thanks Anthony, I'm sure someone will be in touch.

All the best

Jim

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Charlie (24th Oct 2025  17:16:20)

D you really have surpassed yourself on this Thread. For one night of the year, because of our beloved Carnival, certain roads have to be closed for a few hours. Everyone, including yourself, has had ample warning of this and you really have shot yourself in the foot by saying that your bosses have given you the night off. Now I don’t know what your job entails and it is irrelevant anyway, but if your employers can give you a night off, they are either closing their business or managing without you for that time or they have given your shift to someone else. If they have given your shift to someone else ie a “shift swop” which is not unusual, why didn’t they do that in the first place or perhaps you did not request a swop. You would rather post on this site and moan, albeit in a passive/aggressive way, about the carnival and its committee. You state that you have not “slagged” anyone off ( I do not like the word slagged, criticised is better), but in my opinion you have, as your statement that you consider the carnival committee very selfish in not considering others with their road closures, clearly demonstrates. For the record, the people who organise this carnival, committee and everyone who works so hard to make it the success it is, are people who do this altruistically, to give many hundreds of people the chance to enjoy themselves and have a good time.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Matt Lynch (24th Oct 2025  18:13:09)

Hahaha !! Hilarious, go on Edith girl!

'D' I'll let the dear lady take it from here mate. She clearly got you sussed.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Alfred M (24th Oct 2025  18:31:52)

I felt compelled to respond here, not to 'D', his view is irrelevant, but to my fellow carnival lovers afore mentioned above.

- There are channels for complaints to complain. Clearly this fellow has gone through a channel, albeit not the incorrect one, received an answer he did not like and sought to come here for a moan, its their thing.

I appeal to everyone giving this person a platform or a reason for other like minded moaners to come to his aid. Thats how it works and always has, thats how they spread, unfortunately, negativity breeds negativity.

Ignore him - is what I'm saying, he'll love that more.

Best

Alfy

I remember when I had my first job in selbourne . One very bad winter snow blocking roads I was 17 just got my first car with shovel in the boot dug my way to work arriving lunch time. The manager said unbelievable you best go back home because the weather is going to get worse we won’t dock your pay . Snowflake comes to mind.

- Scott (24th Oct 2025  22:40:54)

If you've no plans of driving anywhere (work commitments or otherwise🤦‍♂️🤣)during the fairly short period of road closures tomorrow evening theres a great opportunity to grab a pint or two at Liphook social club. We found this out this evening from a lovely lady who works there. They have a free house from midday until late. Drink responsibly and hopefully have a great evening, the roads will be back to normal by the time you wake up for your next shift.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- D (25th Oct 2025  08:16:59)

Anthony's poem would have been a nice place to end this thread, sadly it wasn't to be. Edith, my boss lives in Hindhead, he is aware that for me to drive to Haslemere, then Hindhead, then double back onto the A3 south would add nearly ten miles to my journey. He is appalled that a woman of 76 would deliberately set out to bring about someone losing their job. His actual words are unprintable, but I can repeat "vindictive" "malicious" "bitter" and "old woman". He is disgusted that I have neighbours who would do such a thing. He also doesn't want to add all those unnecessary miles to work so he is taking the night off as well.

Sorry Edith. Sorry Matthew Lynch. You'll have to try Lynching elsewhere. 😄

That is a very nice poem Anthony, thankyou for sharing it with us. No mention of the carnival queen but I suppose that has a different meaning these days. 😉

See you later everyone. 😀

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Charlie (25th Oct 2025  10:30:45)

D I do not know what company or person you work for but it seems very strange that both you and your boss can take the time off on Saturday, so please forgive me if I make the assumption that your boss and company are very flexible. This begs the question “why all the fuss in the first place about difficulty in going to work because of “once a year road closures for safety reasons with plenty of notice” for a very worthy and happy occasion giving hundreds of people a great deal of pleasure. I will end by saying that even after all the posts on this Thread you still don’t get the message. Sad.

Hi 'D'

I'm glad you enjoyed my poem ☺️ I do love the carnival and I am sorry you feel the way you do about the volunteers.

My poem is in dedication of my late friend who sadly passed away 😔

His name is in capital letters to the left in the poem which I believe Matt picked up on, the intention is for the commentators to give him a shout out on the tannoy this evening.

Take care 'D'

Anthony ❤️

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- D (25th Oct 2025  11:55:31)

Charlie, the purpose of this thread was to suggest alternative routes in and out of Liphook for the duration of the carnival. It is the likes of yourself, Edith and Matthew Lynch who turned it into something else. Thankyou.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Edith (25th Oct 2025  12:19:32)

Ok poppet. 🤦‍♀️

Here's some productive alternative routes you've mentioned;

“That honour should be bestowed upon Liphook Carnival Committee. They will close as many roads as they want regardless...”

“I think the carnival committee very selfish in not considering others with their road closures.”

Thanks Anthony for the poem, we all see now.

Its not nice having your thread taken off on a tangent or completely off point in a wild digression is it. Strange seeing that you normally seem to do that on every one elses Mr or Mrs D.
Reap what you sow and stones in glass houses eh!

Just a reminder, roads closed between 6pm to 10pm.
Enjoy the freedom to walk the streets safely everyone and hope you all have a lovely fun evening.

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Resident (25th Oct 2025  12:42:14)

Don’t know what all the fuss is about there are so many alternative routes to get out of liphook for the very short period that the roads are closed. Back in the day when the A3 came through the main road was closed both sides of the village on carnival night. Diversions as far back as Milford and petersfield right out to Farnham it’s so easy know to get out of liphook on the night no problem at all .

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Rg (25th Oct 2025  12:46:44)

Oh no a while 10 minute longer journey oh the agony and pain , if and accindent in liphook on your way to work would you make such a fuss. Relax take your time enjoy the journey

Re: CARNIVAL ROAD CLOSURES, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
- Charlie (25th Oct 2025  12:56:36)

Yes D it is true that your original post was giving alternative routes but as Guy said in his post this was done in a “passive/aggressive way and I agree with him. If, perhaps you had just posted alternative routes, and left it at that and not included the “poor me” bit about getting no sleep etc etc implying that it was the fault of the carnival organisers, your post would not have received the reaction it did from posters. I think you wanted to provoke a reaction and you received one. You still haven’t replied to my observation that, if it is apparently so easy for your boss to give you time off and take time off himself, why you started this Thread at all. Bah humbug springs to mind.
