Carnival - Russ (21st Oct 2025 - 09:59:26) Our great carnival nearly here let’s hope the weather is kind to us . Our very hard working carnival committee are doing a fantastic job in organising this wonderful event . I really hope the new residents of our community support and hopefully enter a float to enjoy the night there is nothing like it to be involved on the night. Here’s hoping for a very good night.

I understand that there will be several new floats this year as well as the regulars. As well as the procession itself there will be the regular food stalls in the Square and down Station Road Not forgetting the Fun Fair on the Millennium Green. Brilliant Paul Robinson

Heard there was some moany old bats up on the Green, knocked on my Simons door soliciting a signature to petition the Parish into closing the funfair! Until he told her to bugger off. Why on earth buy a house opposite a village green then complain is absolutely mind boggling. Sad really.

Re: Carnival - Tee (23rd Oct 2025 - 20:16:17) I heard that too Gary, heard they got Environmental involved claiming they want the music turned down because they've got kids. My friend Mark lives opposite the green and said one them is a busy body. I hope they complained to network rail also about the train line running through their back garden! The mind boggles. Checked on Facebook, nothing of them trying to drum up support there, I wonder why. Tee

Re: Carnival - Gary (23rd Oct 2025 - 21:30:38) Tee, we move from Meadow way to the Avenue some 15 years ago, my kids grew up with the bonfire and funfair literally in our back garden when it was in Radford. I do not remember one complaint EVER, we got involved with all the other residents, I was a bonfire marshal, and it was a pleasure. For one night a year! I had quiet for the rest of the year and that was the compromise. The problem is nowadays, the minority mindset has been empowered with social platforms and they get louder as they congregate. There's no helping or compromise with these people. People have rights, I get it but when its a handful of peoples rights vs thousands of people's rights then a line needs to be drawn. I hope the authorities do not succumb to appeasing the minority, regardless if they're using their kids as fodder to get their selfish way! Best Gaz

Re: Carnival - Lewis White (23rd Oct 2025 - 22:28:24) You kind of cant expect the newer residents, I'm talking people not growing up here experiencing the nostalgia, memories and joy of the coming togetherness, people even less than 10 years a resident, experiencing only 8 or 9 carnivals to share the same connection as long standing residents. I understand the defensiveness around the preservation and why people would see involving external authorities even as an attack on the carnival, I get that. They're adults when they move here so they've missed all those moments. I hope they involve their kids in the carnival as they're now the ones who will carry it on. I do feel for the residents with the noise. If you don't like something thats ok, people shouldn't be driven out of their homes but at the same time, they've had a 120 year notice.

Re: Carnival - Russ (24th Oct 2025 - 10:50:53) Would just like to say being a lifetime resident over 80 years and taken part in the carnival for a great many years, it’s a great night as said over 120 years it’s just one night we all have to put up with something we don’t like at sometime so hopefully the new people to our village yes village as we still like to call it will come to love the carnival as we do. Bring your children out and introduce them to something that they may never have seen and perhaps all you lovely new residents will keep this wonderful tradition going. As for living around the green I live on the avenue and I am housebound twice a day at school time something I have to put up with life’s little challenges . Going to get my scooter out and see the carnival again wouldn’t miss it .

A big thanks to the wonderful committee for your hard work putting this on again long may it last power to your elbow as they say.

Re: Carnival - Steve (26th Oct 2025 - 04:40:05) Another disappointing Carnival! I know it will upset a few but as a long time resident (who used to be involved with the organisation) it is upsetting to see the decline year on year. The number of floats just seem to get less and less each year.

Anyway) his moan has been rinsed and milked dry 😔😔 as a member of the moaner party i apologise for 'Steves' unoriginality in his moany old moan.

Re: Carnival - Jen (26th Oct 2025 - 12:41:02) I agree, Steve, it's a shame that the carnival has got so much smaller compared with how it used to be. I think there are various reasons for that happening: - key people involved in the annual float-building may have moved away/died/become too elderly to participate. - people have less free time than they used to. - pubs and clubs have closed down. I'm sure there are many other reasons. But yes, it's a pity that it's a much lesser event than before. I remember the rivalry between the different pubs and clubs, for example. Their floats were always amazing feats of engineering. There had to be so many prizes (best float over all, best on the move, best illuminated, best out of the pubs and clubs, best children's etc etc) as there were so many floats. Having said that though, I'm very glad that it's still going - and despite the smaller parade it's still a great night of family entertainment. Long may it continue - and a big thank you to everyone who helped to make it happen.

Re: Carnival - Dulip Sang (26th Oct 2025 - 16:36:05) Visiting some friends who moved here from Beckton a few months ago. A charming little event and lots of happy faces. Only critique is that it was not particularly inclusive and diverse which is probably why it is such a small procession when compared to other carnivals

Re: Carnival - D (26th Oct 2025 - 18:57:15) Not sure what you mean by "inclusive and diverse", Dulip. No one dictates who takes part, if no "inclusive and diverse" people want to enter a float then there will be no "inclusive and diverse" floats.

Re: Carnival - Joe (26th Oct 2025 - 19:14:57) I am sure that there was no discrimination practised by the carnival committee - in fact they would have welcomed anybody to take part not turned any one away who wanted to provide a float or take part, and do not think any of the participants would have thought about not taking part because they were upset the carnival was not inclusive enough?

Tom, whilst you don't have to agree with Dulip's comment or their concerns, you can argue against them by all means, it's not hard to do since their comment is easily refuted, but instead you just made fun of it which is probably the sort of response that makes people feel unwelcome or excluded in the first place. Re sex, which you brought up, I don't suppose it's as black and white as you think, people don't just say 'oh I'm a cat today' they suffer years of doubt and worry and exclusion and jokes, till eventually they discuss it with medical people who I think are better placed to take a view than you are. If life has taught me one thing, it's that we know very little yet, it's far more varied than we ever realised, so yes it's just possible some people are designated the wrong gender for reasons far beyond my understanding. Tell me, have you figured out life better than science has? If so, answer me just two questions, why do particles exhibit a dual state at quantum level but not at macro level and how do particles know whether or not they are being observed in the double slit experiment and change state from wave to particle, but only if we are watching? I'm not expecting a profound answer Tom, but give it a go, because I'd love to know and you seem to know a lot😂

You’re the type of person who would tell a young boy, born a boy, that he’s actually female, adding confusion to an already fragile state of mind. But riddle me this, would you tell an anorexic person to keep starving themselves because that’s how they feel? Of course you wouldn’t, unless you’ve completely abandoned reason. You’d recognise a mental health struggle and encourage treatment, not affirmation. That’s the crux of it, you’re mistaking compassion for enabling. You think you’re being kind, but you’re actually reinforcing delusion. There’s a difference between supporting someone and misleading them. As for your “quantum physics” tangent, trying to use Schrödinger’s cat to justify social ideology is like using astrology to plan surgery. Observation might change a particle’s behaviour, but reality doesn’t bend to your feelings. A man can observe himself as a woman all he likes, but the biology stays the same. So before you start lecturing others about science, maybe start with a basic understanding of it, and of common sense. Re: Carnival - Pete (27th Oct 2025 - 14:24:06) Dr Tom - Ref your first and last paragraph sombodys sexual orientation and attribution would depend on wether you are talking about purely physical attributes or if you are also taking into account chemical and neurophysiology. As er rightly says there is a lot we dont know. As for "You're the sort of person"etc, bit of a leap isnt it.

Sure, there are chemical and neurological factors that influence how people feel about themselves, I don’t dispute that. But that doesn’t change the biological reality underneath it all. Feelings and facts can exist at the same time, but one doesn’t rewrite the other. Yes, there’s a lot science hasn’t figured out yet, but that doesn’t mean we throw logic out the window. We wouldn’t tell someone with body dysmorphia that their perception is reality, we’d help them understand and work through it. That’s compassion with honesty... not denial. And no, nothing personal was meant by my comment. My frustration is with the culture that now labels basic truths as offensive. That’s where the real problem lies. Tom

I think the majority of us, especially those that have moved here from London in recent years will appreciate a broader more inclusive experience

The VAST majority have read your comment and are nodding their heads in agreement, its sad we're even talking about this. Its only a few that will draw exception to these facts but unfortunatly they're the loudest because after all, they think that giving kids puberty blockers is potentially saving a life instead of dealing with the route cause which is indeed these 'ADULTS' confirming its ok. Or you could yourself recruit spacifically the catagories you've mentioned to keep the city folk happy? Yes, lets pack the committee based on diversity, equity, and inclusion instead of merrit based to tick this box. What a great idea. :) Back to reality - I'm pretty sure that the current committee do not give monkeys about someones sexual orientation or ethnic background and would welcome anyone to help out.

Re: Carnival - Carnival enthusiasts (27th Oct 2025 - 16:28:49) Dave if you move to a different location surely you embrace where you have moved to so many people want to change where the live to try and make it the same as where they have come from. This is the problem with people coming to our country they don’t want to live by the country’s rules. If you have come to liphook something must have made you choose liphook so joining in the local activities and clubs ect and looking at the history of the place is something that is a must liphook has a huge diverse population and most have fitted in to Liphook’s way of life not tried to change things.
