Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- paul (25th Sep 2025  15:11:50)

Hi,

Now our Keys, Shoes Repairing, Drying Cleaning, etc, has had to move location due to local planning laws, is this right?

The store in its now previous site, served customers very well, and professionally. These services are not provided in-store at Sainsburys.

For the sake of a few parking places, it is a poor decision. It enabled local people the convenience. It was central location during their shopping trip.

Good luck to local planning.

Paul, when I've done any building work on my house I had to jump through hoops. Planning laws are for everyone no exemptions. (Though in reality money talks).

No services lost Paul, it has been relocated to the North-West corner of the car parking spaces, against the stone wall, near to the postal lockers. Where previously located it blocked the view of pedestrians using the crossing as you entered the main car park.

Has planning permission for this been passed? Last I knew it were refused.

Not sure Timpsons moving all of 50mts makes it impossible to get to and a planning mistake?
The planning mistake is all Sainsburys fault. If they had waiting to get planning permission in the first place before installing the pod then this wouldn't be needed.
For clarity Sainsburys and Timpsons located the pod, and started trading, before they obtained planning permission. Permission was refused, due to the idiotic location alongside the pedestrian crossing and the distraction to drivers. Sainsburys went to appeal and the planning inspector refused the appeal too.
Timpsons continued to trade illegally (in planning terms) and applied for planning permission in the new location.
Permission was granted at the end of July for the pod in the much improved location alongside the store, near to the covered area and the existing pedestrian walkways. A far superior location in my view and where it should of always been located.
No loss of trade ever to Timpsons ......just another nail in the coffin to our own local hardware shop, but of course that's progress?

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- er (26th Sep 2025  12:55:09)

Without knowing the full process that took place here, it should be said that it's not illegal to continue trading after losing a retrospective planning application if a lawful appeals process is followed, it's only at the end of the process once appeals are exhausted and enforcement is commenced that it would be potentially illegal to continue.

Also, whilst bigger competition is often challenging for local stores, it is the very basis that this nation is built upon, capitalism. We pride ourselves on a free market, choice and ease of availability, the opposite is stagnation, where you have to queue at the government shop for your daily bread and drive a Trabant😂

I agree having the local Hardware store is delightful and I would encourage people to use it I'm sure they will continue to find their USP and adapt, our town is growing quite rapidly and other choices will be accommodated for the growing population,

So I was right, money talks. Only a matter of time until the small carpark is repurposed as a shed retail park. (What's this "pod" business? It's a f****** shed!

Hi,

I think Liphook should be proud to have a Timpson outlet.
They are the U.K. largest service retailer.
Founded as a family company in 1865.
They also support ex-offenders, to improve their lives for the future.

Good luck to them in our village.

Well said Paul

The original position was highly dangerous for people using the zebra crossing. Companies cannot think they are above planning . A very good decision. Sainsburys should have known better. It would have been better if Timsons had gone all together

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (1st Oct 2025  19:22:13)

The only thing that amazes me about all this isn't the apparent cavalier disregard for the town and country planning process, more that not one member of Sainsbury's management team appear to have had the brains to see the original location of Timpsons shed was probably the most dangerous place on their premises to have it.

Private land or not, anything which obstructs the vision of both motorists and pedestrians right next to a zebra crossing is irresponsible to say the least. Maybe it was a case of profit before safety, only Sainsbury's management know. Time for another safety course maybe, try listening on this one.

Just had three keys cut for our daughter in Portsmouth Timpsons . She had to replace her front door lock barrel she bought new lock with three keys from B&Q £25 three keys from Timpson £24 hum seems Timpsons are rather high priced .

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (7th Oct 2025  12:03:02)

I remember when Coytes used to cut keys. If it was an ordinary Yale latch type thing you were okay but anything else got the reply of "we don't have the blanks for those". Then B&Q came along, quicker to drive straight down there than wait around half hour to get served.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- Jen (8th Oct 2025  18:09:38)

@D - rather than going all the way to B&Q, surely it would have been quicker to use one of the more local places to have keys cut? You could have gone to Tanchoux in Grayshott, or to Altis in Lindford (now called Farnham Tool Hire) or to the cobbler in the Forest Centre in Bordon (admittedly, now closed down but was operational until a year or so ago).

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (8th Oct 2025  19:23:18)

I take your point, but even though B&Q is a lot further away, it is quicker. Take another example, Argos. Nearest one is (was) Farnham, but Havant is a lot quicker.

[editor]Isn't there an Argos in our Sainsburys now ?[/editor]

Think the hardware shop cuts keys. And would think they would be much cheaper.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (9th Oct 2025  07:57:44)

Yes there is, Ed. I'm relating to before the demise of Argos proper. I used to use Argos a lot but I've discovered eBay since then. Saves a wasted Saturday morning traipsing around and half a tank of petrol.

Timpson are expensive.
In the Chichester branch £20 + for a watch battery. £10 in a jewellers or £6 at the market stall on a Wednesday.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- paul (9th Oct 2025  10:44:27)

Hi Jon,

How much time, and fuel, to drive to Chichester and back, to make these savings?

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (9th Oct 2025  12:06:12)

Paul, pardon me for commenting on your correspondence with Jon. I take your point but when I started going to B&Q instead of waiting forever and a day to be served in Coytes I also discovered the (early stages) retail parks down that neck of the woods. Not shopped in Liphook much since.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- Jen (9th Oct 2025  12:09:09)

@D - I remain unconvinced that it's quicker to go all the way to Havant to get keys cut.

To get to B&Q in Havant, and back again, from The Square would (according to Google Maps) be a round-trip journey of 42 miles taking 48 minutes.

To get to Altis in Lindford would be a round trip of 7.8 miles taking 16 minutes and to get to the car park in Crossways Road in Grayshott (from where it's a short walk to Tanchoux) is a round trip of 8.6 miles taking 14 minutes.

Providing you avoid the rush hour, it's actually slightly quicker (46 minutes) to drive the round trip to B&Q in Ladymead, Guildford than it is to Havant. It's also closer, being a 34-mile round trip from The Square.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- Jon (9th Oct 2025  12:50:08)

Paul.
I was also shopping at other stores that are not local, so there was a saving.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (9th Oct 2025  13:37:08)

Jen, factor in the time you used to have to wait in Coytes. There was a Timpson in Waterlooville, don't know if it's still there. I used to wonder if Coytes kept you waiting to make the shop look busy.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- paul (9th Oct 2025  14:30:45)

Hi,

Any reference to shopping at Coyte's, compared to other outlets today is "for the birds"
The shop in our village closed decades ago (1970's), and retail has changed completely from those times.
Internet shopping, big supermarkets, retail parks, the high street etc...

Liphook has a small offerings of retail outlets, they need supporting.
It is to survive for their existence in the future.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- Jon76 (9th Oct 2025  16:34:59)

True any reference to Coyte's is outdated. Believe they closed in the 1990's, as they were certainly open in the late 80's/early 90's when I was at Bohunt School. They served their purpose in the day, before the World Wide Web arrived & evolved to what it is now. On another note Timpson's have twice been refused permission at Tesco, Petersfield, in 2023 & 2025. Over 1000 people signed a petition in 2023 because of the implications for the "Petersfield Cobbler". In 2025 it has been refused because of the proposed locational impact on the footpath/cycleway to the local schools.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (10th Oct 2025  18:45:55)

Jen, must admit I've not been to Grayshot since I worked round there over thirty years ago. Great to know Tanchoux is still there, just goes to show that despite competition from the large DIY chains and internet shopping there is still a place for a small, local, well run local business who put customers first. Good for them.

Re watch betteries
Picket and pursers Petersfield offer very good service and very affordable £10 about an hour time for a coffee and cake not far to go

Hardware shop does some key cutting in station road.

Pint of peas from coytes, gallon pink parrafin, thermos replacement inners, those where the days.

2 green grocers, 3 butchers, several banks, modern way of life stopped all that bring back the old days.

Re: Timpson move position at Sainburys Liphook
- D (11th Oct 2025  09:28:07)

They were nicer days, Gr.
