Hi,
All Estate Agents are Spiv's, con people.
I have known some of them, and they are not honest, for the fees they overcharge .
In status of reliable people, they are just (only just) better than Politicians. I would have Nigel Farage sell my house.
Their business practices are government regulated, but they are
" Cowboys". underhand practices for profit.
A great shame on our good - willing English society.

I'm not here to defend the honour of estate agents or any other agents/traders. When a business is trading or facilitating - rather than MAKEING or physically labouring then you should expect some underhand practices to keep in business.
But who the hell are OUR BBC to criticise others for dubious practices?! OUR BBC are top of the game at corrupt dirty practices, even worse when their funding is an obligatory public tax (you may disagree if all your current affairs reporting comes from OUR BBC).

I think the purpose of asking what occupation you followed is to then expose so supposedly “hidden” commissions obtained in that line of work. Hidden commissions are not always known about by all staff anyway. It is usually the salesmen who benefit. Estate agents should be more regulated, as should car dealers and double glazing salesmen.

BZ Paul ,
I wanted to join the Army but they wouldn't have me, I served elsewhere for a short time.
My wife is employed by a small independent Estate Agency, they all work very hard in a stressful environment.
It is not unknown for them to drive a lot of miles to pick up a potential and usually elderly buyer, at no cost or obligation, to view a property. They do go the extra mile.
Just thought your comments were a bit harsh.

My experience of estate agents has been unfortunately not very good either. The fee they applied to the sale of our property did not in anyway equate to the effort they applied to their service. On the rare occasion they actually attend the arranged viewings they brought very little to the conversation as none seemed to own a property which left them ill equipped to answer any perfectly normal questions raised by potential buyers.
With their Tesco suits and well greased heads they brought very little to the conversation.

PR The keyboard warriors who use this site very rarely back up their statements with hard facts and information. They criticise, moan and complain, but never put their head above the parapet.

Yes Charlie - quite agree
Obviously it would not be appropriate to name where my wife works, but I would stand by my comments that they [ her employers ] do really go the extra mile to help both buyers and vendors - I had no idea of this profession before she worked there, probably shared the same critical attitude. But they are sole traders , not a chain.

Hi,
Estate Agents in general offer poor communications, to both buyers, and sellers.
In their trade there is a lack of regulation. Anyone can set-up this business, without formal qualifications.
There is conflict of interest, towards sellers, and buyers. They want a quick-sale for their own commission, not in the interest of paying clients.
Many estate agents may work hard. Though it is still an unscrupulous business model, in the U.K.

Actually, estate agents are regulated, Estate Agents Act 1979. Also have to comply with money laundering regulations.
